Add Bluetooth devices as sound input/output devices.
Written by dotancohen the 14 Oct 08 at 15:15. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As Kubuntu already has terrific bluetooth support, I would like for bluetooth headsets to be available as i/o devices for music players and VOIP applications. A general option to route all sound through the headset would be great.

Lock/unlock all items on panel
Written by adam adamant the 14 Oct 08 at 10:03. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
Allow users to easily arrange and edit their gnmoe panels by locking and unlocking the whole contents of a panel at once. This idea is taken from the Enlightenment (v17) which has the feature.

This is a problem if I want to add a new shortcut to my panel and I want to put it in the middle of a set of other shortcuts which are all locked. I have to unlock half of them to be able drag the new icon to into place and then lock them all again.

It seems like it would be easy to provide a lock/unlock all option, perhaps it could be activated along with the new (in Intrepid) "Allow panel to be moved" option.

Speedup update-manager
Written by preben4 the 14 Oct 08 at 13:25. Category: Installation. Related to: Update manager. New
the idea is suggesting that once a package has been downloaded, it should be installed while the rest are still downloading. Packages would be downloaded and installed in order of dependency, to avoid errors. This could be done while updating or while just installing several packages at once.

This *would* speed up updates considerably, especially for people with slower connections. And although this is separate from delta patches, both could be used in conjunction.

This will help slow computers, especially when you are installing ubuntu a few months after the release. If you have an old computer or a poor downloadrate, this will take you more than an hour, why not speed it up a little:)

thanks to rouge568 for rephrasing my idea:)

This idea do not substitute for delta-patches. Both Ideas could be used together...

More details on moving/copying files over a folder that already has that files
Written by thipv the 13 Oct 08 at 23:46. Category: Usability. Related to: Nautilus. New
The idea is, while moving or copying files if Nautilus find a duplicated file name between the source and the destination folders, it would compare both files and show some data for both of them, also allowing us to make a comparison, like file size (in bytes), creation and modification dates, thumbnail when possible (very important when organizing photos) etc also verifying if they are exactly the same using checksum (or any other solution to do this), ignoring if they are identical or, if not, letting us chose Replace, Replace all, Ignore, Cancel or Rename. I don't understand the Ignore all button, I think Cancel has the same purpose.

Managing large quantity of files will become a little bit easier for everyone with this. Some times i need to go to both folders and open the properties of both files to check some details to make a decision. (Sorry for my English)

Ubuntu Search Part 1 - Support wildcards, regex, and keywords
Written by _alex_ the 14 Oct 08 at 16:28. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is part 1 of an epic series of ideas on how to make search in Ubuntu not suck. In this idea we'll look at features for more advanced users. The following applies to all search fields where it makes sense (this includes Tracker and Nautilus):

1. Support keywords (a la Google search). For example: "Boulevard of Broken Searches filetype:mp3". This would look for mp3s of the preceding name (not that this song remix actually exists, though it probably should). Here "filetype" is the keyword (same as in Google). Another example: "*.jpg size:<1M" -- find JPEGs less than 1 megabyte in size. If additional metadata is supported (say by Tracker): "*.mp3 rating:>3". This would find all mp3s with a rating greater than 3. More on the metadata thing in another episode.

2. Support wildcards: * + - | , & and or not
For example "*.jpg, *.png" would look for images of the two file types. "+search -great" would look for files that have the word "search" in them, but not the word "great". Use your inference skills to figure out what the other wildcards do. Note: there is some redundancy!

3. Support regular expressions. Wildcards are okay for novices, but us experts need more power at our fingertips.

This idea in our epic series awaits your vote. Tongue-in-cheek comments are not only welcomed, but also solicited :)

This was Part 1 of the epic Search Suckage In Ubuntu Series (SSIUS).

Reminders at logout
Written by atorreaa the 14 Oct 08 at 19:55. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I' ve always wanted an application that helps me to remind things I have to do before shutting down the computer, like "answer Peter's mail", "sync your ipod", that I can't do on that precise moment because I'm working or very busy on something else. It will avoid users to start the computer again.
Then, the idea is to create (or modify) an application that let the users to write simple before-shutdown-reminders (that is as simple as writing them, not setting place, time, priority...). A dialog must be displayed at the time the user press the shutdown option showing the reminders. There must be an "Ignore reminders" option in case you just need to shutdown the computer quickly.

Better search function
Written by AleRi8 the 14 Oct 08 at 13:15. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

better search function when looking for more than one file it will show you the files it has currently found while it is still searching for the other files instead of having to wait untill the search has finished to see the files it has found which is annoying having to wait

I can change wireless networks without sudo, but I can't change "location"
Written by vexorian the 14 Oct 08 at 15:28. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Network Manager. New
Ok, I must say that network manager's location feature is completely useless right now because you need sudo rights to change the 'location', this is just ridiculous, I'll explain what goes on right now:

You can turn the network off, turn wireless off, change wireless network to anything else, and do a lot of things without using sudo rights. But if you want to change the 'location' in the network manager. (And 'locations' are a bunch of settings already set up by the administrator so you know they are safe) You need to open the network manager, unlock it, type password and select the new location.
This makes the 'locations' feature totally useless, it doesn't help users at all , you still need admin rights to change the location, and in the case of a lappie this basically means everytime, At home I have static IPs, elsewhere I have DHCP when connecting an ethernet cable to my netbook, somewhere else it is better to use wireless, but I better use specific DNS servers. These locations should be changeable by the user as easily as you can change wireless networks, really.

Add ".bash_logout" by default
Written by Krupski the 14 Oct 08 at 17:54. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Very simple... an Ubuntu install creates a default ".bashrc" file for each user but not an empty ".bash_logout" file.

I wanted to run a small script upon exiting a shell and I had to ask how to do it. If the bash logout template had been there by default, I could have put 2 and 2 together myself.

Increase gnome panel "Places" menu capacity
Written by Emacs23 the 14 Oct 08 at 04:49. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
By default it has only 5 items, when you add more items, it is shown as Bookmarks submenu. In order to see this, just add more than 5 items to the "places" sidebar in nautilus, and then click "Places" menu.

Compare with the attached screenshot.

http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/3305/denis-cheremisov.8/0_1ed3f_ff2d4b42_orig

To make so, you only need to change macros MAX_ITEMS_OR_SUBMENU in file /gnome-panel/panel-menu-items.c into the value more than 5 (it equals 5 by default) - I have 50.

Installation Assistant !
Written by El Barto the 14 Oct 08 at 17:31. Category: Installation. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
First of all Excuse me if this idea is in the wrong categorie, but it's my first idea an joined 2 days ago...

Well, i know that in Ubuntu is used the Gdebi package manager as a .deb packages installation assistant or synaptic, and it's really easy to use but i have seen a lot of applications that comes in a .bin format (for example Google Earth if you download it from Google's page) or in .sh format (usually comes with a MAKE or MAKE INSTALL file) and the MAKE and MAKE INSTALL files when you download it form the internet.
what i want to say is that if you have any of these formats, and you double click on it, the assistant start to install the application automatically, and more important, if you double click on a MAKE file the assistant should compile and install automatically the application. this will be really useful for new people that want to install applications that ARE NOT IN THE REPOSITORIES.

Another thing could implement is that when installing an application, missing dependencies are needed, the assistant should try to search online for those dependencies and solve it!

eventually the assistant could convert automatically the .rpm files into .deb files and open the Gdebi to install the .deb resultant package if possible... HOPE THIS COULD BE USEFUL.. !

Auto-detect Playstation Portable (PSP) and ovver useful options
Written by andersja the 14 Oct 08 at 15:58. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Today, when a PSP is connected to Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), a PSP is identified as a portable music player and the same dialogue as an ipod is run (i.e. do you want to manage this in Rythmbox etc)

As any PSP owner will know, the PSP can do more than playing MP3s, so it'd be cool (although a "nice to have" if Ubuntu popped up a menu offering more sophisticated options (e.g. set date/time, reformat and upload photos, upload homebrew games (if appropriate firmware is detectable and present, offer link to URL to fix firmware if not...)

Edit title: should be oFFer, not ovver

GUI showing mouse bindings, keyboard bindings, and hot-corners/edges for Compiz-
Written by andruk the 13 Oct 08 at 21:35. Category: Usability. Related to: Compiz Advanced Settings (ccsm). New
Currently i have to hunt for bindings in Compiz-config Settings Manager to find out what is bound to certain actions/buttons. Instead of hunting for them myself, perhaps it would be best to include a "page" in CCSM that would show the mouse bindings, keyboard bindings, and hot-corners/edges currently in use for Compiz. Tooltips for keyboard and mouse buttons would show the modifier buttons needed for that key for all actions bound to that key.

This would also be great if it was integrated or part of a global keyboard/mouse binding utility as suggested in (many) other ideas on Brainstorm.

Edit: Whenever a dev gets a chance, would you mind removing the trailing dash on the title? Apparently I didn't catch that before submitting....

Fix Search in Ubuntu
Written by _alex_ the 14 Oct 08 at 05:16. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
Search in Ubuntu is broken or nearly useless in most places.

1. Fix Tracker quirks: http://s4.tinypic.com/awq1s2.jpg
2. Make Nautilus search faster.
3. Show search results as you type
4. Option to search by file name only (and/or content)
5. Rank files by relevancy. Relevancy is composed of:
- Number of matching query terms
- Date (files: last accessed, emails: date received, etc)
- Location of file (e.g. ~/ vs /usr vs .gnome2/)
- etc
6. Integrate Tracker tagging into Nautilus (Expand the status bar to display additional context sensitive info for selected file, including a field to add/edit tracker tags).
7. Support regular expressions in searches for advanced users
8. Support keywords in searches a la google (e.g. "journey filetype:mp3", "*.mp3 rating:>3", etc)
9. Support wildcards: * + - | & and or not
10. Saved search folders.

All of the above should be exposed to applications as well. For example, searching in Evolution would find emails as you type, allow wildcards, regex, keywords (e.g. "subject='[Bug*'"), etc.

Feel free to suggest other fixes for various search deficiencies in Ubuntu and I'll add them to this idea.

Making the Desktop Attractive
Written by jipson the 14 Oct 08 at 02:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The top and bottom panels in Ubuntu desktop are really flat( two-dimensional. Making them 3D by default will be more attractive. In panel properties window, there should be a slider to control this feature. The user should be allowed to add various effects to the panels. I manually created some of these effects by installing some beautiful themes from Gnome.

Do we really need sudo rights to change network settings to a preset config?
Written by vexorian the 14 Oct 08 at 04:19. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Network Manager. New
After getting an eee I sort of have to switch between "locations" in the network configuration dialog a lot of times, I noticed that you need sudo rights to even change to those. I think there should be a way to make it just require sudo to change the configuration's specific, but if the administrator has already set up a location, you should be able to change to that location's settings.

In fact the locations could be available from the tray icon's menu so you won't need to go to config to just change it.
