Idea #9269: Tell Mozilla to count all the Firefox 3 downloads from repository

bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 23 June 08.
Written by unimatrix the 30 May 08 at 13:00. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
When Firefox 3 is released, make sure it is available to Ubuntu on the same day, so the updates from the Ubuntu repository can be counted for the *Guinness world record* in most downloads in 24 hours.
And most importantly, talk to Mozilla about relaying your Firefox 3 repository download data to them.
More info here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord

Let's help open source achieve another great victory!

RE to developer: You would have counted downloads, not users...

This wasn't doable, there's no real accurate way to count Ubuntu users.

No updates will be counted for the world record, only downloads from mozilla's page. This is in the FAQ of the page you provided ;-)

But apt-get downloads the whole Firefox 3, and then replaces the older one with it. It is essentially the same as a download.
And besides, most Ubuntu users won't download Firefox from a website and install it themselves, because it's not a deb package but a 32bit tar.gz. Not to mention 64bit users who would need to compile it.

I agree with this - since pretty much all Ubuntu users use Firefox (an assumption, I know), it seems like this could add some serious capital to Mozilla's attempt. We just need to figure out how to make this both fair for the record attempt and possible for the average Ubuntu user. Or maybe under-average, since we all know that the average Ubuntu user is smarter than most ;)

I intend to download from there site and delete the file just to get counted. I hope everyone does the same.

unimatrix wrote on the 30 May 08 at 18:38
@yztlyrn
Yes we could do that. But Windows and Mac users can also install it with a few clicks. It's kind of sad that Linux users can't do the same. :(

Too bad you didn't search first. I saw this very topic yesterday.

Do people actually care this much about world records?

unimatrix wrote on the 30 May 08 at 19:49
@DJ_Peng: I did search and found nothing.

+1

Firefox needs Linux and Linux needs Firefox. This could be an excellent opportunity to celebrate the strong relationship between the two.

@unimatrix:
Yes, it apt-gets it from Ubuntu's repos, not mozilla's page. And I'm not saying I think they shouldn't be counted (actually, I think they should), I'm saying they won't be.

I expect they have their servers set up in a very specific way that is compatible with Guinness' rules. And then they'll have people watching the Mozilla people to ensure there's no tampering. So while this is a good idea, it's not going to happen.

If you want to participate in the world record attempt, download Firefox yourself (from as many different IP addresses as you can).

leviss wrote on the 31 May 08 at 10:03
Great idea but as has been mentioned, it probably won't happen because of the Guinness rules but +1.

unimatrix wrote on the 31 May 08 at 12:35
Maybe Canonical could make apt-get retrieve it from Mozilla's servers. It would be everything but easy to do that, but it would be worth it.

bert.ubuntu wrote on the 3 Jun 08 at 19:05
Use a script so repo server fakes a download from mozilla transparently. Just a suggestion.

bert wrote on the 3 Jun 08 at 19:11
It doesn't matter how they do it, but they REALLY REALLY have to do it !!!!!!

lionbeast wrote on the 3 Jun 08 at 20:37
jep it should count, it's a download after all. but like many said.....maybe not possbile.

gclaeys wrote on the 6 Jun 08 at 08:51
I agree that it should be counted.

But will firefox 3.0 be in the depot the day of the official release or will it take longer for the Ubuntu-Team to put it there?

DenialP wrote on the 17 Jun 08 at 01:40
at least a download from your guest vm's in ubuntu will count :)
