Idea #7004: Nice "lock" screen

Written by Lex the 14 Apr 08 at 16:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
It would represent Ubuntu much better if there would be some "nicer" lock screen.
Maybe just add background picture similar to login screen.

UPDATE:
Let us say that "lock" screen is not matching with rest of the system. I am not saying that there must be background picture. I just don't like current gray box. At least “lock” screen should match theme colour and contains Ubuntu logo. It would be useful to get more ideas how to make it nicer.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #7004
Written by Lex the 14 Apr 08 at 16:58.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #7004 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Rounded human-themed lock screen
Written by ikajaste the 23 Jan 09 at 19:00.
[Solution from the discussion.] There is already a nice human-themed lock screen available at http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/09/22/ubuntu-human-gnome-screensaver-lock-dial og-theme/ (Look for the rounded one in the discussion, screenshot available at http://iki.fi/ilari.kajaste/dist/ubuntu-human-lock-screen.png )

I don't know if that adapts to your theme or not - but at least as a simple fix I propose to include it in ubuntu distribution as default lock screen.

Solution #3: Return to login screen
Written by j v the 5 Aug 09 at 09:22.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fast-user-switch-applet/+bug/296396 by bastafidli proposes a good solution that just sends you back to the login screen when the screen is locked.

It also allows you to leave a message for someone who is off-line.

It looks good, it works better, I think its a good idea.

Maybe have this as an option but i would still prefer to keep the black screen, save energy and everything.

You can set a custom picture if you wanted by setting your screensaver to F-spot then play around with the settings within F-Spot.

I'm not sure if I like the idea of having something like the login screen, but the Lock Screen feature feels a bit not right.

Voted yes.

Do you mean like this?
http://www.johnnykonline.com/files/ubuntulock.png

I installed that lock by following this tutorial: http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/09/22/ubuntu-human-gnome-screensaver-lock-dial og-theme/

The tutorial asks you to download a file, but provides a 404 when you try. A copy of that file is available here: http://www.mavrev.com/tmp/gnome-screensaver-human-rounded.tar.gz

This should absolutely be included in future versions of Ubuntu.

edit: the URL of the tutorial shouldn't have any spaces in it. In particular, remove the space in the word "dialog" before trying to access the address.

Brainstorm bug :-/

Give me a mockup and I will create it.

You can put screen saver on the lock screen. And there is some screen savers that can show photos..

It's awesome when you complain about something, just to find that you're not the only one and there's already been decent conversation regarding the topic.

I don't need anything fancy, I'd just like it to match the the system theme (Login screen and/or the system theme). The tutorial that John Karahalis points us toward is precisely what I am looking for.

Personally I don't like the human theme and changing it is the first thing I do when I install Ubuntu. But the human-theme-lock-screen tutorial is exactly the right idea.

I think it would be nice if the lock screen would match my theme and maybe look a little more professional.

The current lock screen looks like the same one I remember using in 1999 on Red Hat 5.

At least “lock” screen should match theme colour

It does. Change your theme in Appearance Preferences and the colors of the lock screen will change, too.

What do people think of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fast-user-switch-applet/+bug/296396 ?

This seems like a very good idea and would fix the problem better than solution 2 from the description.
