Idea #6991: Change default compiz setting from Wall to Cube

Written by Daveman the 14 Apr 08 at 13:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Hi,

The calling card of compiz is the cube.
Newcomers to Linux want to see it.
Why is this not the default?

Cube caps and cube reflections should also be default.
And a nice default skydome should be selected as well.

I already did this in the Ubuntu farm I administer, but this should be default for all.

Thanks.
Dave.

No default, but it should be easier to turn on.
Not every graphics card is strong enough for this.

OK, we already have 2 levels on the appearance menu.

Why not have the wall on the normal setting and Cube for the extra setting.

Dave.

I totally agree. I love the cube and if you are going to have compiz, it won't slow down your machine too much to have the cube.

The wall is more efficient than the cube. the cube is just prettier.

If the wall is more efficient, it should be in the normal setting.
If the Cube is prettier it should be in the extra setting.

Don't you agree?

Dave.

Default is 2 virtual desktop, not 4.
Maybe that is why cube is not default.

-1, please keep the wall.

The default compiz settings are designed to primarily improve productivity and secondly to look nice. Cube is just a little bit "useless" really.

Daveman wrote on the 14 Apr 08 at 20:30
I fail to see the usability advantage of the wall.

The cube is totaly unnecessary.

Ubuntu is made for productivity, and the cube doesn't increase productivity.

If you want the cube, just install CCSM.

even though I agree that the cube should be saved for the extra settings, how is the wall more 'productive'? just because it doesn't add any unnecessary eye-candy doesn't make it 'productive'...

I personally find it less productive, because atleast on the cube, I can go from my 4th desktop to my 1st with just one flip, whereas on the wall, I have to go backwards through 2 other workspaces...

I'll vote +1 just because it should be default for the 'extra' setting, and it should include cube caps and maybe a simple skydome...

I'm a big fan of the wall. It makes sense for switching between mostly two displays. The cube is just eye candy, something to play with but not especially useful. To me, it is also annoying eye candy. Please don't make it the default.

I suppose you guys have all four of your desktops laid out like this:
[ ][ ][ ][ ]

I have mine laid out like this:
[ ][ ]
[ ][ ]

in this way you can switch to any desktop in one motion. thats why the wall is better in my opinion.

-1, Wall is just better.

Saying "The wall is better" is a very stupid statement as it definately a matter of personal preference.
I prefer using the cube and do find it very useful, however I do agree that cube should not be the default due to its efficiency.
The issue really the fact that its too hard for peopel who know nothign about the effect system (I.e. dont know its called compiz) to hunt down the manager app.
Anyhoo thats not what this thread is for so I will vote down but needed to point out that sme people do like the cube and find it nicer to use than the wall.

Saying "the wall is better" is not so stupid, since it's clearly a matter of preference.

Saying "the wall is more productive" is the real stupidity here (not offending anyone).

The Wall, the Cube, and the old simple workspace transition before compiz are the same in one point: They don't make you work faster! Not even on of them. They all behave almost the same, but the "animation" is different. That's all.

Don't matter if you see a cube spinning or a wall passing by, the time it takes to change the workspace is almost the same. The difference is so small that it doesn't matter.

It shouldn't be the default, but it sure would be nice to have it in the "Appearance" control applet, where you enable "desktop efects". There you would have the ability to choose if you want cube or not. And there also would be nice if there would be a hint placed there regardind the existence of ccsm with which you can further tweak compiz.

don_quixote wrote on the 19 May 09 at 17:43
The wall IS more productive. It gives a much faster view to the workspace than the cube rotation, regardless of the graphics card. The cube is a nice graphics trick, but I fail to see the use, aside from a technology demo. As a result, it should NOT be the default behaviour. CCSM should probably be installed by default, however.
