Description
I just bought a new graphics card (8800 GT)and there seems to be problems with it being picked up automatically in ubuntu. It would be nice if that new X.org was finally implemented.

ah yes, infact, I use a 6800 GS pci-e card, and xwindow NEVER starts up properly (in any version of ubuntu), until I download the drivers (from nvidia) and install them manually.

Till then, all i get is a screen filled with horizontal and vertical colored lines...

This can be a real put-off if someone has no idea how to download the drivers from a command line. To make matters worse, the drivers will work only if installed from init level 3 with xserver shutdown.

Hey, it'd be great if we could have better nVidia support right out of the box, but that's really up to the guys over at AMD/nVidia, now isn't it? All developers can do is hack and reverse engineer, receiving occasionally a driver or two to help their process.

I'd love it if hardware manufacturers started paying attention to the growing demand of their proprietary drivers in Linux, though. But that's something that only the manufacturer can really have a say on.

I am using 8600GT and there is a bug in the 169 drivers that causes pink/yellow shadows. :(

Pressure on Nvidia is a nice idea, but in the meantime dealing with ubuntu 7.10 and nvidia bites, because the ubuntu machinery steps in and "saves" me from that evil driver I have installed by hand, changing my working setup to one in 800x600 on just one of my two 24" screens.

This is extremely frustrating. I'll deal with having to manually install a driver if Ubuntu would rather not support it, but please, please, please make it it obvious how to get your machinery to get the hell out of the way.

It's quite done in 8.04 (except for the easily-fixable pink shadows in compiz)
