Idea #6186: Make mouse backward/forward buttons work in Firefox and Nautilus

bug This idea was marked as implemented the 29 June 11. Available starting Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.
Written by surban the 31 Mar 08 at 21:30. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Implemented
Rationale
I have a Logitech Mx510 mouse.

It has a backwards and a forwards key on the side. In Windows these keys can be used to navigate backward and forward in the browser and file manager.

In Ubuntu these buttons are detected but have no effect in Firefox and Nautilus. Please make these buttons work by default in these applications.

I can't find it anymore on brainstorm but there was a mention to include btnx which would solve this problem. If that is the case then this idea can be ignored?

btnx seems more like a hack than a real solution to me. Why not just change Firefox and Nautilus to handle mouse buttons properly?

It works in Firefox here!
Mouse: Logitech MX500
Ubuntu Hardy Beta (updated yesterday).
Firefox 3.0b4

Agreed, mouse configuration should be more "user-friendly"

flo.fichte wrote on the 8 Apr 08 at 17:32
It should be like the configuration of the special-buttons from a keyboard!!

I tried to setup on Hardy with xdev and xbindkeys but it does't work..

So pleas make a tool for this special thig!!

Mouse configuration must be easy to handle for beginner's

vietnameseloempia wrote on the 28 May 08 at 01:00
I agree, the extra mouse buttons should just be configurable in the mouse menu (preferences > configuration centre > mouse, dont know if this is the correct translation, my ubuntu is dutch, "voorkeuren > configuratiecentrum > muis")

I am very happy that the forward/backward buttons are working in firefox now though.

I have a logitech mx310 and it works in ff3, but not in nautilus.

I HATE accidentally clicking 'back' though. Still, +1.

yes, me too, I would like have a good interface more user-friendly, with a picture of the mouse and button, I think it's possible, isn't it?

Rejoice! This has been implemented in Karmic. Sort of. It works in Icons and Compact view, but not in list view!
