Description
Make Wine 1.0 available in Hardy (through hardy-updates). This makes it easier for some companies who depend on XP software (which already works well in wine) to make the transition to Ubuntu.

IMHO it would be nice to release wine 1.0 through hardy-updates so everyone who hasn't disabled hardy-updates will get it. The wine 1.0 branch will probably continue to receive important updates making it easier for Ubuntu to maintain.

According to Eric S. Raymond's "World Domination 201" Wine is very important for Linux to become successful on the desktop.

Why wine is so important :
http://www.winehq.org/site/why
http://catb.org/~esr/writings/world-domination/world-domination-201.html

Wine 1.0 will release on june 6th. Hardy will release on june 5th. This makes it impossible to include wine 1.0 in Hardy except through hardy-backports or hardy-updates.

Wine 1.0 is released for Gutsy and Hardy through backports.
It will be available via update too soon on Hardy.

Do you really think the 1.0 version will be drastically different from the one in hardy?

ubuntu_demon wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 13:16
It can be nice for marketing towards companies.

XSP wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 13:42
Marketing Wine is like saying, "Here we are. We can't live without Windows."

You can easily add a repository for wine and update it yourself. Nothing is stopping you.

Eldmannen wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 14:14
Yes, put 1.0 in the repositories.
Don't install it by default though...

vexorian wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 14:32
"It can be nice for marketing towards companies. "

And then Canonical gets sued for false advertisement.

1.0 will only got ability to run Photoshop and Office as warranted, if we advertize ubuntu as being able to run windows software companies will assume their totally ridiculous custom software will run, but since it is most likely wrongly coded, it won't and then they will get pissed off.

n2 wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 15:30
Hardy's release is not June 5th, it's April 24th. June 6th is the 8.04.1 release date - which is only tentative. Just wanted to point out this error.

XVIIarcano wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 16:38
probably I miss the point, but since wine IS included by default in Ubuntu (currently 0.9.58 or so) is there any doubt about the 1.0 version being in the repos when it will become available?

ubuntu_demon wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 17:42
n2 :

I know I made a mistake but sadly I can't edit the idea to reflect this.

vexorian :

I'm not saying Canonical should say that Wine will be able to run all XP software. It's nice though to be able to run Wine 1.0 easily.

Backports are for such things.

World Domination 201 was a really interesting reading.

flip314 wrote on the 31 Mar 08 at 06:24
if you need it THAT badly just add the winehq.org repository.

I seriously doubt wine 1.0 will end up in any hardy repository except MAYBE backports (since it's an important version)

alberge204 wrote on the 31 Mar 08 at 07:48
The Ubuntu philosophy, as far as I understand it, doesn't place emphasis on getting the most bleeding-edge packages. I personally have some issues with this, but I don't think making exceptions for single packages is a good idea.

spyyder wrote on the 31 Mar 08 at 22:29
@alberge204

since when was wine bleeding edge?

SalarSoft wrote on the 5 Apr 08 at 08:04
I suggest that only include wine in DVD images.

Holy_Cheater wrote on the 5 Apr 08 at 08:57
Well, you can add wine's repository to get the latest version of wine.
There's a lot of another packages, that REALLY need attention with packaging.

fluo wrote on the 5 Apr 08 at 23:13
You need windows programs? install windows
-1 for counter-progress

csmth wrote on the 10 Apr 08 at 02:31
To fluo: I need wine, not Windows. They are different, at least wine is open implementation and Wine is more preferable than Windows.

ubuntu_demon wrote on the 27 May 08 at 14:38
Personally I don't care much about wine but lots of people do. That's why I submitted this idea.

Auzy wrote on the 28 May 08 at 02:36
fluo, That seems like a great attitude. Instead of moving people towards linux, keep them on windows.

That will REALLY encourage developers to make native ports.

Actually you can,
1 - Go to "My dashboard".
2 - Then go to "My ideas"
3 - Click on the idea's title.
4 - Click on the pencil icon on top of the idea's description.

Don't worry, I'm going to put 1.0 into backports for Hardy (and Gutsy) once it comes out.

sisto wrote on the 12 Jun 08 at 19:41
yay!

sisto wrote on the 12 Jun 08 at 19:41

still cant update.... >.<

plz update wine guys!!

dlublink wrote on the 21 Jul 08 at 15:02
I think this should be added to hardy-updates. Hardy Haron is a LTS release and should contain stable software. Wine 0.9x are not considered stable. Wine 1.0 is considered stable and addresses a lot of fixes ( amongst other fixes the fix I need to switch my MCE machine to Linux).

I believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to update to wine 1.0.
