Rationale
I think it would be interesting. Music is a powerful tool to link people (if the song is good, obviously).
It could be used in some sort of welcome screen after first boot, with some welcome message, the examples, etc. Could also feature in Ubuntu credits screen. Maybe orchestral, like a movie or game soundrack (could be Leon Willet from Dreamfall OST :) ). Maybe it could be an open contest, but i think that wouldn't be very easy...
It could be orchestral with some african sounds :) I only say orchestral because it's a kind of music that almost everyone likes (it's in movies, games, etc)
Make it hardcore doof doof music, and you'll find car-audio enthusiasts will advertise the song for free friday night, full blast while cruising by the clubs
Ubuntu!
It's you and me
I know it's my destiny
Ubuntu!
Ooh, you're my best friend
In a world we must defend
Ubuntu!
Our hearts so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I'll teach you
Every challenge along the way
With courage I will face
I will battle every day
To claim my rightful place
Come with me, the time is right
There's no better team
Arm in arm we'll win the fight
It's always been our dream
But what i would like to have best for ubuntu song is the one that we already have in ~/Examples directory installed: ubuntu_Sax.ogg is very melodic, it should be evolved to a full song.
Although we should also make a contest, where people can submit their works, and we could vote for them here.
Or just use the music used in the Nelson Mandela Interview. I believe it is still on the Live CD but it is on youtube as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODQ4WiDsEBQ
Egh, if you want to attract 70 year olds, classical/orchestral is the way. The reason Apple doesn't use classical type stuff, is because they want their OS to feel young..
