bug This idea is a duplicate of idea #238: More Hardware support..

Written by kumailht the 20 Mar 08 at 00:34. Category: Hardware support.
Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
hardware compatibility should be documented so that it can be later used to match it with the users hardware and report its status to the user.

even though the user can use the live cd, most users wont want to download 700mb to check compatibility.

example : user decides to try ubuntu, he is concerned about his hardware compatibility .
he downloads a small software available for windows , mac and linux.
this software analyzes the hardware , it reports the hardware to the server, server responds with answers to whether the hardware is compatible or not. if it isnt , are there any manual steps to get it to work,

Fantastic idea! Not long ago I had some problems because I tried to install Ubuntu on a friends laptop that was not compatible. This little app would save me all that trouble!

This should be integrated into this app:

@tomaszx: How is that spam? I really, truly believe that the best thing would be to make one app with both of those ideas integrated into one instead of two different apps, and I thought that if someone else likes this idea as much as I do, they might like that other idea as much as i do too. So I wanted to make people aware of it. This is a place for ideas, right? My idea is to integrate these two apps into one. I didn't submit the idea I "linked" to, if that's what you think, I just wanted to make people aware of it. I don't understand how that can be seen as spam.

How many more duplicates are we going to get about this idea? I think i already saw about 50.

Good idea.

Many times people are unsure if their hardware will work or not.

I think the reason he called it spam is because your link goes to: idea #5164: Brainstorm: I wanna bookmark my place when reading through "Latest"

I don't know how that possibly relates to hardware compatibility much less how you could integrate the two. It doesn't relate and therefore it seems to be a spam link.

Possibly you copied the wrong link?

Interesting projects which could be useful for this:
http://dohickey.parsed.net/
http://hardware4linux.info/

They basically offer a hardware analysis+report client and a database storing hardware compatibility info.

There's also the Hardware testing app from system->administration (hwtest-gtk) which does a system analysis. (Is hwdb-gui the same?)
But I can't seem to find the info I submitted on http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/

Here's what I have:
