Idea #4989: Replace the "Examples" Folder!

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #8648: Update the Examples Folder.
Written by DPic the 18 Mar 08 at 04:57. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
The examples folder NEEDS to be replaced. Most of us probably ignore it but have you seen it lately? It doesn't matter because it hasn't really changed! It contains an ancient video that looks like it could have been shot with a handheld camcorder, a speex file which just says "This is a librivox recording" blah blah blah, some ogg file of saxophones which isn't bad but could be better, and a bunch other miscellaneous files.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #4989
Written by DPic the 18 Mar 08 at 04:57.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #4989 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Make an "Introduction" folder with "Examples" as a sub-folder
Written by Endolith the 23 Jan 09 at 20:33.
Some of the files in the Examples folder are actual examples, but others are an introduction to Ubuntu (like the cryptically named "oo-welcome.odt").

The main folder should actually be an Introduction/Welcome folder, with a few documents explaining to new users the basics of Ubuntu ("we install packages from Ubuntu servers, not .exe or .dmg files", "you can use Firefox instead of IE or Safari, and OpenOffice instead of MS Office", etc.)

The Welcome folder should be linked from the Desktop, not the Home directory, so that first-timers see it immediately.

Then the additional examples can be in subfolders, like the "Case" files could be in a folder of their own, with a more descriptive name like "Ubuntu adoption - case studies".

Greate idea, just uptade these files.

yok-sudo wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 11:34
You can only delete it with "sudo nautilus" - that's bad. Newbies didn't know how to remove it.

sedra wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 12:18
yes update it

fabioamd87 wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 13:58
i agree

Instant +1, that folder should contain some fresh media material. Besides, if Ubuntu is going to make any improvement on the public opinion, official video/audio footage is needed so that it can be used on TV or radio.

Bonus points for localized content! Maybe the three or six most popular languages.

Mario92 wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 14:51
yep, updatecould be good.
Example folder contains only logo of ubuntu, kubuntu and edubuntu. It should also contain Xubuntu and Gobuntu.
+1

Alan Pope (Ubuntu developer) wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 15:00
You can remove the example-content package which will remove this stuff.

Jono Bacon is now responsible for this package, so you can petition him for updates :)

Ralf.Nieuwenhuijsen wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 15:40
You can remove it without sudo.

Just do a:

unlink ~/Examples

Removing it from nautilus should just work as well, if not, that's a bug. Nautilus should be able to unlink symbolic links.

This stuff should be updated with every new release

tbrminsanity wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 18:55
I say delete it. It doesn't really add anything to the OS.

wleoncio wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 20:24
I don't like that folder either. And I think newcomers don't care for them either. I say "delete it"!

gijsterbeek wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 20:31
Is it that folder with Nelson Mandela in it? Don't replace it, delete it. It doesn't add much.

Well, these files are useful for testing a computer's ability to work with media files (does the sound work, can I play video with Compiz enabled, etc), so I don't think they should be removed, or maybe they should only be placed on the Live Disc. I agree that they could be updated.

Ralf.Nieuwenhuijsen wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 22:08
Only on the live-cd .. that one makes sense. Still update them.

If you really needed your computer to play media files, then you probably already have your own media files.
To me this sounds like a waste of CD space.

Delete it!!!!! Is it only me or it doesnt even allow you to delete it after install??!

To hell with it :D

oliver@schinagl.nl wrote on the 18 Mar 08 at 23:27
Don't delete it ... replace it. Savy users will delete it maybe anyway. The reason why you want it, especially on a liveCD, is to test audio/video. Since it's ogg, the codec support will also allready be there.

Ralf.Nieuwenhuijsen wrote on the 19 Mar 08 at 00:04
At least fix nautilus, so that we can unlink it.

Currently, you can't remove links with nautilus.

i say delete it and add a "Tutorials" folder

instead of openoffice examples, add some tutorials with pictures.

some gnome tutorials are need too. You think gnome is so easy? well it's not it takes weeks or months to learn

-How to install programs (it's should be clear that it's not like windows where you get all your programs from the devs website)

-What are restricted extras and how to install them

-Nautilus and file system tutorials (once again, is not the same as windows)

-Gimp beginners tutorial (it's included with ubuntu or not)

-System tools and preference tutorials

people think that if they fiddle around with their OS it will break (and most times it does), so a few tutorials will show them basic stuff without them breaking anything and fear ubuntu.

I'd say delete it but if Canonical decide to keep it, there's plenty of material under Creative Commons that can fit there.

MilesTeg wrote on the 19 Mar 08 at 16:45
actually why not add some great media that is public domain? (nasa pictures, videos; classical music etc.)

ttsmj wrote on the 19 Mar 08 at 22:34
update it with some fresh artwork

jmmL wrote on the 19 Mar 08 at 23:57
DEFINITELY don't delete it, it's extremely useful to work out if all your media devices are working well etc.

For example, i've got a Creative X-Fi soundcard, and it was pretty difficult to get working until i found a HOWTO. Having the example files already there was a useful diagnostic tool, because i know that there won't be any codec issues (like with .mp3 etc) that's stopping the playback.

But they do need an update, and there could probably be less of them as well. At the moment there are duplicates of file types (multiple pictures for example, i cant remember which format - png?). The duplicates could probably be removed to leave one music file, one video, one picture and one word-processed file.

Idea: Option at installation to delete the folder (newbie confuser maybe) OR update as the above consensus seems to be. Maybe with some short (30 seconds or so) spots that could be used as free advertising for internet radio stations or Public Access TV stations. Spread the Good Word!!

deejross wrote on the 20 Mar 08 at 20:39
Most people won't use this folder, so it shouldn't be installed by default. Since it is a package, it would be easy to install for those who would actually need that stuff.

If nothing else, make it easy to unlink the folder without having to use the command line.

diaa wrote on the 24 Mar 08 at 04:04
mmm... I don't know what to say, how important to you think this is? how does it rank against WiFi issues, graphics or usability issues?

I think important issues should have much higher priority than this one.

yoman82 wrote on the 26 Mar 08 at 19:14
I say we should have little guides and the like for using the programs the different files were made in, and possibly some UPDATED information 'bout Ubuntu.

andersja wrote on the 6 May 08 at 17:27
Agree - this is the default installation "showcase" for all newcomes to Ubuntu - something cool (an educational "webscast"? some Creative Commons-based photography or music?

1up

Show better examples on LiveCD but don't install.
