Idea #475: Nautilus NFS share browsing & config

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #456: Graphical mount of NFS partitions.
Written by dhaus111 the 29 Feb 08 at 02:07. Category: Internet & Networking. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I don't understand why Nautilus has built in support for windows networks (samba), but no native nfs browsing... shouldn't that be the other way around? It should also be implied that if you don't specify any allowed connections, any connections on your subnet be allowed.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #475
Written by dhaus111 the 29 Feb 08 at 02:07.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #475 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

I agree that NTFS should be automatic and pre-loaded (even though it's quite easy to add but spare the user when possible). NTFS is not the greatest disk format, but it's achieved market saturation like it or not. And users EXPECT to move pocket drives from PC to Mac to... Linux?

However, the GUI can subtly discourage it by simply never making it the default choice. I'm no security expert but it seems that NTFS's security design is a bit cumbersome and could compromise the core Ubuntu system if people started using it too freely for anything other than removable drives. I guess it's better than FAT16 though. :)

This is not about NTFS but NFS (Network File System).

I think file sharing with NFS is too complicated compared to Samba, +1 from me.

Is there an existing protocol for listing NFS shares? I don't think there is. But nautilus support for browsing a known share would be good.

Currently, you have to manually set it up by editing your exports file, then using fstab to mount them automatically at boot, or manually with the command "mount -a". Its not too difficult, but would be a deterrent to windows users who are used to the easier way.

NFS is too complicated compared to Samba ?!? Whoo boy, you got me there. :) I don't know about under the hood, but just on the basis of conf file details, Samba is *by far and away* more complicated. Heck, even just looking at the respective Webmin pages and all the options available makes this pretty clear.

Konqueror has its nfs:// ioslave. Nautilus already has smb:// support, which amazes me on the one hand given the absence of NFS share browsing, but then again I'm not surprised on the other hand given the apparent affinity among certain Gnome devs for things Microsoft...

Anyway, while browsing *unknown* NFS shares on the network is indeed difficult given that NFS has no built-in broadcast mechanism (whereas Samba does), the inability to even view *known* NFS shares with a hostname or IP address specified right on the address bar is a bit of a downer, and just makes me like Konqueror that much more.

As an aside, it would also be nice if Nautilus offered something like Konqueror's (or even Mac Finder's) zeroconf browsing capabilities, so that even unknown, but Avahi-broadcast, NFS shares could be browsed (c.f. this post on the Ubuntu Forums: [http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4387032#post4387032]).

I think it's realy cool idea!

The irony is that Gnome *used* to support it, w-a-y back in the day. It even -- through blackest magick, no doubt -- allowed browsing of unknown NFS shares. (No, I still don't know how that worked.) This was in the graphical-revamp-of-midnight-commander days, well before Nautilus showed up on the scene. And, frankly, in a very real sense, helps define my single biggest problem with Gnome: over the years, they've had many, many cool features that just fell by the wayside. And this is just one of 'em.

Oh, well...

Hi. Now I am working on some Nautilus plugins for NFS support in Ubuntu. I am use NFS server and client, autofs, avahi and python nautilus scripting.
If you are interested yet, please write me. Now I have plugin for easy NFS sharing and working on NFS shares browsing.

Will this plugin be integrated into the connect to server dialog, or be separate from that. I think a plugin is a good start, but it really needs to be integrated into nautilus ultimately. I'd also like to see an option for ssh servers which allows you to select a private key, then prompt for the passphrase.

Hi guys. I made Nautilus plugin for NFS sharing and browsing. Check it out:
http://nfs-lan.sevka.info/
It based on avahi and autofs.

Ok, it's only alpha version. But it's work on all my PCs and I gonna continue to work on it.

There is a deb package. Source will be soon on the Github I think, because Launchpad is too complicate for me.
