Description
For the 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" release we had a 'countdown'.
* http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown

Users could link to an image/script that would countdown for every day that pass. Like "Ubuntu 7.10 - 93 days left".

And users could post it on their blogs, forums, websites, etc and it would generate a buzz and hype around the upcoming Ubuntu release and get people excited.

It was great. I propose we do the countdown again, now this time for the 8.04 "Hardy Heron" release.

+1 from me.
I used the last one on my blog, and would like another one for Hardy :)

Only problem would be with this is if hardy got delayed.

Good idea though.=]

1+

I'm for that too. Only make the script/widget reset to the next release when the most recent one arrives.

chewit wrote on the 14 Mar 08 at 14:13
We should have, for such a big update as. Its an LTS!!!!

I will be able to put it on my blog, as well

edhewitt.co.uk (sorry for the plug :P)

It would be nice if we could have one that didn't use JavaScript for the countdown. WordPress.com blocks JS from sites it hasn't given a seal of approval to so anyone with a blog there has yo use the plain image.

I would welcome it too. I put in on my website. I definitely think we should have the same for Hardy.

Eldmannen wrote on the 15 Mar 08 at 02:57
Yeah, I posted it on several different forums.

Would immediately put this on my blog too!

can't believe it doesn't exist already.

Would make my own but I'm not that good with jscript. Please keep modding up!

There is a link that is supposed to do this (found it on the Hardy Beta Wiki)...but it seems to be broken...

I created a Kubuntu flavoured countdown already: http://www.seqfault.de/blog/index.php?/archives/83-Hardy-Countdown-Noch-35-Tage .html

If you like it, put this code on your website/blog to include it:

Here's the link to the countdown:

Just one problem. The code on http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown doesn't have a so those of us with sites on servers that block JavaScript (like WordPress.com) can't use it at all.

implemented in fridge....go check it

Don't just show the JavaScript, use it.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown

When I go there, I want to see how many days there are left.

wladston wrote on the 25 Mar 08 at 13:00
looks like there is a problem, it doesn't show the counter on the http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown, instead it asks for a password!!

I noticed that.
But I have tested the HTML code and it works.

aubergene wrote on the 26 Mar 08 at 14:39
Needs to show the actual release date as well on the button.

DJ_Peng wrote on the 30 Mar 08 at 21:21
Sorry, guys, but we still need a NOSCRIPT section. And forgetting server functionality, not including a NOSCRIPT with a section is bad (and lazy) programming.

A static image would be like so much more useful. Sure, it would have to be recreated once a day but I think canonical has enough computing horse power to be able to cope.

No smart site allows custom JS because of cross site scripting issues (XSS).
