Description
There's something that's ALWAYS annoyed me about gnome (but it's way better than XFCE... UGH!) and it's the desktop icon grid size. In Windows, it's smaller and you can fit icons nicely.
Those with 1280x1024 screen res and icons at 75% will know what I mean: There's a HUGE gap at the right and you can only fit icons with small names in there. (but it still looks bad, like, too "off")
There should be an option to change the grid size, space between icons, whatever you want to call it.

For me the size is ok, I don't use many icons in my desktop, but if you like small icons you can set it globally in any nautilus window in edit, preferences.

The biggest problem is icons in Nautilus. Nautilus should cut off long file names, and squeeze the icons together more tightly.

Gnome should have this setting not only for desktopl but also for Nautilus. That percentage setting that changes the whole grid is terrible. Just allow me to set that in pixels for each setting, just like in KDE or Windows and I would be very happy.
Gnome lacks most obvious settings for everything that I want to change. This desktop spacing thing was one of the main reasons I switched to Kubuntu, and I don't intend to go back ever.

please dont compare it to windows....
every windows desktop i've ever seen is a disaster, a complete mess. I've seen windows desktops with over 100 filthy icons.
They should not call it "windows", but "icon-mess"
when i switched to ubuntu, my desktop never became so messy ever again, what a relief.
when it's messy i just drag everything to my personal folder(s). Talk about convenience :)
everything is easier to find in the main menu too

This is particularly a problem in xubuntu... with xfce.. the grid size is WAYYYY too big.

Sorry, it's prettier IMO when it comes to the desktop solely: Cleaner on the eyes and small, tidy icons. Not a HUGEOMGWTFLOOKATMEI'MAHUGEICONONYOURDESKTOP thing.
I like desktop icons, I love them, and yes, Gnome needs a feature to do this... or Nautilus, since it's the one which handles the icon size.
Regardless, we should be able to change it!
+1 to the possibility to change it in pixels

can't disagree with you, having more options is always better.
anyway, i think only the guys at gnome can implement this.
but they might be reading this who knows. Anyway, i think that throu their mailing list you may suggest this directly to them.

Agree with this idea, a smaller grid is badly needed. Configurable grid size is a big plus!
