Idea #3144: Add/remove refer to synaptic

Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. Status: New
Description
A lot of packages are not accessible via add/remove. This is ok, but maybe there should be a button like "extend search to synaptic" with an explanation what this means. Hitting the button would then open synaptic with the exact same search terms.

A lot of people only use add/remove and get stuck when not finding what they want although it's there (ready to be installed via synaptic). This could be improved with a simple button and a message in case no result is displayed ("you might want to extend your search in synaptic", clickable).

I was just about to post an idea exactly like this :)

There is a popular discussion going on about removing add/remove and making an "easy mode" to synaptic. But it got voted down very fast into significant negative.

But you essentially get the same thing if you just refer to synaptic inside add/remove as the advanced features. And it would actually do a lot to clarify to newbies what the reason for synaptic is.

How about only exposing the option of Synaptic finds something but Add/Remove doesn't? They all use libapt under the covers...

But maybe you find something in add/remove which is not what you wanted, while synaptic would find what you want. According to your proposal synaptic would not be presented then.

So reminding the user of synaptic all along would not be too bad, I guess. Maybe it could be stated that "synaptic found [number] additional packages. See them?"

In whatever form, Ubuntu does need to simplify its package management. We have add/remove, we have synaptic, and we have the update manager that updates things we install through both of those. This is a lot to take in for a new user. Combining at least the first two (just to the point that we remove one of the buttons, preferable the one in system > administration) would make things much clearer. It's kind of counterintuitive to have two 'applications' to do the 'same' thing, even if they're two frontends doing different things.

So yes, combine these two, and make synaptic the 'advanced' mode if you want.
