Description
Currently, the state of font rendering in Ubuntu is acceptable, but it is still a far end behind the font rendering on proprietary platforms (Windows/MacOS). Although certain font rendering (hinting) algorithms are patented and cannot be used by default everywhere, at least the DPI detection should be better, as one sometimes ends up with huge windows with text that is too small or too large to read.
Probably some usability expert input is needed to tune this.

Font rendering in OSX is good *because* it does not use hinting.
