Idea #27415: User icon display

Written by OckhamTheFox the 17 Mar 11 at 21:05. Related project: Live CD. Status: New
Rationale
I think user icon should be displayed in Ubuntu GUI. User icon could help more clearly indicate which user is logged in multiuser OS.

Many contemporary websites are displaying icon of a logged user on upper panels and they are not looking bad.

User icon would not take much user space and can benefit user with appropriate menu (log out, shut down, away etc).

Mockups:

The Ubuntu icon can be placed in the title of a corresponding pull-down menu.

Solution #2: Remove login name from panel, replace status icon with combined user-status icon
Written by Felitaur the 21 Mar 11 at 16:23.
User login name is taking too much space on the panel, but it is mostly useless. Existing status icon is also pretty ugly.
So I propose combined user-status icon, which should display drop-down user menu, as current applet does, but also indicate, what user is logged in currently by icon itself.
Also, this icon should display a tooltip with user login name on mouse over. See mockups:

Such icons should be autogenerated using small variants of Pidgin status icons (which I think, it the best) and user-selected icon by overlapping.

Combination of #1 and #2: combined user-status icon on the place of Ubuntu logo.

Is the user name on the top right not enough?

It is wasting to much space, I think, also it's not "visual"
