Rationale
Description taken from the wesite:
The Dohickey client is a GUI software tool which allows the user to list the hardware within his or her machine. Each piece of hardware is given its own id, and this id is then looked up online to see if there is any existing information about this hardware in the database. The GUI then allows the user to report to the server how well the hardware works, edit the information attached to that hardware and send in comments and instructions for the installation of the hardware, which will then be added to the online database. From that point on, anyone who browses the database online will be able to see that information.
So, you get to find out about your hardware and help other people, all in one stroke.
And the best: It would work using the LIVE-CD, so you could check the hardware easily before installing or sometimes even before buying the product.
> I haven't tried dohickey, but it seems to be an early beta.
It's late Beta, your point is valid however that there is work to do, mostly in the integration of the server and client.
However even as a stand alone hardware viewer it's got merits above others. I would suggest that you use it and see for yourself. Perhaps if we can get more community people involved in it's development the software will reach maturity faster.
As one of the testing users i can tell you that it is in beta because of things like ram detection which are extremely difficult, but the program is very stable and with a few tweaks would be a great tool for the live-cd.
