Idea #2374: Easy Hardware Check and Database/ Integrate Dohickey client into Live-CD

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #40: Create a better hardware database.
Written by leu the 2 Mar 08 at 02:44. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Description taken from the wesite:
The Dohickey client is a GUI software tool which allows the user to list the hardware within his or her machine. Each piece of hardware is given its own id, and this id is then looked up online to see if there is any existing information about this hardware in the database. The GUI then allows the user to report to the server how well the hardware works, edit the information attached to that hardware and send in comments and instructions for the installation of the hardware, which will then be added to the online database. From that point on, anyone who browses the database online will be able to see that information.

So, you get to find out about your hardware and help other people, all in one stroke.

And the best: It would work using the LIVE-CD, so you could check the hardware easily before installing or sometimes even before buying the product.

The look and feel is ubuntu-like.

I haven't tried dohickey, but it seems to be an early beta. Do you really think this is stable enough to go into an official release as default?

You could easily try it by installing dohickey_0.7_all.deb by your packet manager.
You get it here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=177020

For Desktop and Notebooks it works already stable. And it is so simple to use!
Actually they are integrating some server specifics.

I will contact the author to leave a comment here :)

Thank you for you comments.

It's late Beta, your point is valid however that there is work to do, mostly in the integration of the server and client.

However even as a stand alone hardware viewer it's got merits above others. I would suggest that you use it and see for yourself. Perhaps if we can get more community people involved in it's development the software will reach maturity faster.

As one of the testing users i can tell you that it is in beta because of things like ram detection which are extremely difficult, but the program is very stable and with a few tweaks would be a great tool for the live-cd.

Just a short How-To:
--------------------

1. Install dohickey_0.7_all.deb using your packet manager.
You get it here -> https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=177020

2. Start Dohickey Hardware Manager in System>Aministration>

3. See rates and notes about your hardware, make your rates and notes and click "send"

That's it :)
Effective and simple.
