Idea #23617: Notification blob shows with offset

Written by argento the 8 Feb 10 at 22:15. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
notify-osd system shows a shadow bubble when something has to be notified.

Change in sound volume or screen brightness shows the bubble just below the top bar, and that's Ok.

But, other notifications are shown with an offset. This was done by design to let volume notification compare. This offset is still present even with no-volume notification

Solution #1: Slide down old notification
Written by argento the 8 Feb 10 at 22:15.
I agree to show just few notifications at a time (say 2 is OK as now).

Let every bubble appear just below the top bar, without offset.

New bubbles should push old ones down.

It can be implemented with a sliding effect.

Solution #2: #1 and show synchronuous notifications centered
Written by WvBraun the 1 Mar 10 at 07:11.
Notifications like new emails, hardware notifications and so on are asynchronuous - they should go to the upper right as in #1.

Other notifications as volume or brightness changes and so on, should go to the center of the screen with a square-shape notification and fade out faster. These notifications a synchronuous, that means they are a direct feedback to user's keypresses or comparable events.

Solution #3: #1 & #2 and make it configurable
Written by WvBraun the 1 Mar 10 at 07:21.
It would not hurt to have some user accessible options (some kind of menu), where the number of notifications, place of appearance, behaviour and fade out times can be configured.

Solution #4: #3 + Add possibility to show previous/next notification
Written by LaMeR the 2 Mar 10 at 23:32.
Add keyboard shortcuts to show previous/next notification (to move in history of last X notifications - number of notifications in history should be configurable). Make it optional - enabled only if user selects it, and also configurable like other keyboard shortcuts.

no bubles over the navigation of the windows :(, make it a little bit offset.

For some reason, that small detail of the bubble being offset downward causes a lot of irritation for me. It is a bit irrational, but I think this is a very important detail to get right. I like the slide down effect idea, but it should at least do it like Jaunty, without the offset. It would be nice if they also have an option to exit them away, like in Mac OSX.

I think the offset was added in order to avoid interfering with certain application features like browsers search's box which the bubble overlap.
