Idea #22404: PIM Sync With Cellphone, PDA, Netbook, etc. are Not Good Enough

bug This idea was marked as already implemented the 15 November 09.
Written by AdlerHorst the 11 Nov 09 at 22:19. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Already implemented
Rationale
I can't sync between my Nokia cellphone and Ubuntu. I have to use the Nokia Suite on Windows XP at work to sync only "private data". At the moment, I send invites for some of my events to my PC at work so I can share it with my cellphone, but I shouldn't have to.

Solution #1: Add a Good/Extensible Syncing Tool to Ubuntu
Written by AdlerHorst the 11 Nov 09 at 22:19.
If the user wants to sync some of his/her data (by converting it from Outlook, etc.), like contacts, Ubuntu One (naturally local or user defined to) should store a backup of the data so the old data could be recovered if something went wrong in the conversion process.

Write a PIM connector:
With this tool it should bee able to add new devices. This tool should give the ability to set up devices with the options I wish to manage, e.g:
Device -- Name -- Possible Data (of course way to)
Mobile phone -- Nokiae51 -- calendar, contacts, todo, files
PDA -- Palm -- calendar, contacts, todo, files
MP3 player -- ipod -- files:*.mp3
netbook -- asusEe -- calendar, contacts, files
Network PC -- MyWork -- calendar, contacts, todo, files
USB-Stick -- myData -- files, todo category:*.txt
Printer/scanner -- HP -- printable files
somefiles -- something -- files
somefiles -- Backup -- calendar, contacts, todo, files

more in future:
IRC -- quakenet -- Data:txt
Jabber -- jabber.org -- Data:txt, contact: on/offline
skype -- skype -- Data:Audio,Video,txt contact:on/offlin
webcam -- webcam -- Data:Video
Logfiles -- LogHomePC -- Data:txt
fdp: -- filserver -- file
keymanager -- PGP -- file, Data

Write a sync:
With this tool it should bee able to manage the data connections and sync between many Programs and devices e.g.
Datatype -- time/event -- Program/device
contact -- connect and 15min -- thunderbird, nokiae51, etc.
calendar -- connect and 15min -- mobile, caldav
file:*.mp3 -- connect -- musicDIR, iPod
file -- on change -- networkPC, local PGP:(ftp, local)
file -- onchange -- somefiles, PGP:fileserver, MyData
todo -- connect -- myData, thunderbird
file -- every Day -- Backup, networkPC, somefiles

Invasively edited title and rationale for clarity and brevity.

Please check to make sure I got the general idea.

OpenSync provides all of the functionality you are requesting - except for possibly file sync, which is covered by rsync (and whatever front-end you want to use).

Specifically, OpenSync provides sync functionality for Nokia phones, with Evolution, KDE-PIM, Google, etc.

This one should probably be re-classified as "already implemented" or "not an idea".

I know about OpenSync but I think its relay bad integrated. I'm not get it work with my nokia e51. It exist more then one syncing tool and with no one could easy synced.

If you have hardware or software that does not work with OpenSync, please file a bug report on the issue.

Marking as 'already implemented'

No. Is not implemented. And really not so like my idea. Give my idea a chance and ignore this trade. And please set the marking back. I changed the Global category to Look and feel.

AdlerHorst is right. There's OpenSync, there's Conduit and a herd of other tools, but they work very poorly. Syncing devices should be a no brainer, but in my case, it always took hours to setup and I often ended up with incomplete or duplicate entries. Or both.

It's also not a bug in one application only. It's systemic. All software that deals with contacts, tasks and events would benefit from a clear syncing solution. Today you can't even easily migrate between Thunderbird, Evolution and KOrganizer running on the same box.

I second the opinion it should be reopened and discussed.

The problem is, everything you write in Solution #1 exists, in the form of OpenSync, which *is* a good/extensible sync tool for Ubuntu.

If you believe it is "really bad integrated", explain why you believe that. Try to narrow your problem down to what doesn't work for you with OpenSync.

Then, you can determine if the proper recourse is to suggest some new/additional functionality here, or to submit a bug report with OpenSync.
