Idea #22116: Minimal Desktop Installation

Written by borpin the 28 Oct 09 at 22:53. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Already implemented
Rationale
There are many examples of people asking in the forums for a minimal Ubuntu Desktop Installation. Currently the perceived wisdom is to do a full installation and then uninstall what is not required. Uninstalling multiple applications has many pitfalls. The other option is to do a server install followed by adding what you want. However, this again has many possible options and I doubt that the server installation as a base is a good starting point for a desktop system.

Solution #1: Minimal Desktop Installation Option
Written by borpin the 28 Oct 09 at 22:53.
Offer an installation option within the Desktop CD that installs a minimal Desktop. Designed for experienced rather than expert users.

Solution #2: Choose what you want install
Written by ubu-user the 29 Oct 09 at 14:13.
Add a step during setup, asking (with falags) about some installations: e.g.
- Need Office suite?
- Need surf the web and e-mailing?
- Need chat and p2p?
- Need multimedia (movies/music/tv)?
- Need edit graphics (gimp)?
- Need eyecandy (compiz)?
- ...

Not 10000 options, but only about some a-lot-of-MB software.

No you fundamentally do not understand the problem. I want a minimal Desktop UI not a minimal install. So no it is not already implemented.
