Idea #22070: Renaming file names could be simpler, in single click launch mode

Written by Leather Phobos the 26 Oct 09 at 21:16. Related project: Nautilus. Status: New
Rationale
This is for people who use the single click launch mode in Nautilus and on the desktop. To rename a file, while using this mode, one has to right-click on its filename and choose "rename". If you have several or more files to rename, over time this is a lot of clicking and menu selecting.

It could be simpler and faster, with less clicking.

Solution #1: just click on the filename, not the icon, to select it for renaming or copying
Written by Leather Phobos the 26 Oct 09 at 21:16.
Instead, it would be easier and simpler to allow you to just single click on the filename to select it for renaming. To open or launch it, just single click on the icon.

This would also come in handy if you want to just copy the filename to the clipboard.

The right-click rename menu item could still be there, I suppose.

I don't think there would be any trouble with people accidentally clicking the filename when they wanted to click the icon, but if someone did that, they could just go ahead and click the icon at that point, to launch it, and the filename would deselect. Or if someone accidentally clicked the filename and then also accidentally hit a key or two, beginning the renaming of the file, they could still hit escape or undo to put the filename back.

In summary this idea is simple, fast, intuitive, and might even help prevent hand pain as the years go by.

(I put this in the category "Usability" but it could also be in "Accessibility" I think.)

Solution #2: As above but refined
Written by trustno1uk the 11 Nov 09 at 15:17.
Completely agree with solution 1 but would be better if you had to click on the filename twice once to get focus and then the second to rename. It makes no sense to have to drill down into a menu. These are the little annoyances that stop Ubuntu adoption. All the big things are there and work its the little things like this that make your life harder.
