Idea #11739: 7zip

Written by crhylove the 2 Aug 08 at 12:00. Related project: Archive Manager. Status: New
Rationale
Make a new 7zip GUI comparable to the windows one, and make 7zip the default compression/decompression program.

It's very frustrating not to be able to decompress a .rar or .ace or .7z directly "out of the box".

no. fileroller is more then capable. the correct idea is 'have .7z and .ace support out of the box'.

zooounds wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 13:59
Yes, 7zip should be support in fileroller (isn't it already?) not the other way around.

Ssdg wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 16:46
ace is a proprietary file format so it CAN'T be done. but 7z should be read out-of the box.

+0 (because of the .ace part)

Ssdg wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 16:46
(oh, and rar is proprietary too)

fukanchik wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 17:19
Agree with commenters above: add 7z support to fileroller.

You know you can just download the p7zip[-full] package from Universe repository and you will be able to open 7-zip files in File Roller!

Endolith wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 19:35
This should be supported by file-roller by default, not a separate program.

Eldmannen wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 19:44
I think that we should make so that we have .7z support out-of-the-box.

RAR and ACE however are proprietary file formats.

File-roller and xarchiver are both OK, but only OK... I prefer the GUI for 7-zip (in Windows) over file-roller, xarchiver and peazip anyday, it's way more informative and handy to use... Make it so No.1... :) (please!)

belovedmonster wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 22:11
If totem can prompt me to install video codecs why can't file roller prompt me to install rar file support?

crhylove wrote on the 2 Aug 08 at 23:58
Exactly. RAR has been around for YEARS. It should AT LEAST be an easy install prompt or something.

fileroller is gui for ALL archival types.

rar and ace are proprietary.

-1 on using 7zip's GUI, RAR and Ace

(I personally dislike rar anyway)

I prefer 7z myself, for just about EVERYTHING.

But if you want to dominate the desktop, as it seems Ubuntu has set out to do (and I'm all for it), then you need to make it easy to use ALL standards, proprietary or not via a quick automagic Next type dialog. You can keep the repos in bad for the purists. That's the best part ABOUT Ubuntu.

I'd also like to see easier and more automagic mp3 encoding, too, although, it's almost perfect now, so this is a pretty minor gripe.

But the same is true for:

rar
ace
mov
avi
mpg
m4a
mp3
ogg

and any other common file type. Proprietary or not, there should be an easy option to at least be able to open the file, perhaps defaulting to open standards for encoding, etc.

7z is supported by fileroller already and it works, there is a little bug when trying to create a compressed file from nautilus in a folder that has spaces though :(

I really think we should all stick to zip. Those 2 Kb you save with 7z or rar aren't really that much of a big deal.

rar is not a standard, retard.
