Love the idea! Also like the fact that in your screen shots it looks like you can vote on different aspects of a theme!
Perhaps the top couple of themes with the highest overall votes could then be included in Intrepid!
+1 (would give more if I could)

I might add, allow guests voting.

Let's say this will be a subsection of Ubuntu Brainstorm,
but it dosen't need all the features of UB.
It dosen't need tags.
For related it needs only GNOME, XFCE and KDE.
And this should be new category.
Or alternately this may be a part of look and feel.
Anyway this is really good idea.
(makes me wonder why can't I come up with such ideas)

I think it would be better of users ranked the themes in order of preference. eg, put number 1-3 with 1 being the highest.

@edm1: Yes, that would be much better. But it seems like that kind of system is not very popular in this neck of the woods and I'm not sure why yet.

And what would Canonical do if users will chose shit?

I personally like having the theme chosen by a small group. That small group ain't doin a great job right now but i'm hoping they soon pay attention to the people wanting more eyecandy. Me included. If we all vote its kinda seein the your present before you open it or something like that. It'll ruin new installation for me

I suggest no use 'default' theme, but select it at install time, before GUI. It's may be 3-4 different main themes, equivalent in their rights, all must be equivalently supported.
It is a way to most democratic OS.

jpka -> I think "Ubuntu" is trying to make the installation as easy as possible - and that means only the essential options. Distro's like OpenSUSE would give you all the choices you want.
lunamystry -> I like having a small group or just Mark, do the final decision as I feel that he/they are very competent in doing so.
Magnes -> Witch is why Mark or the team should, with the votes of the community in mind, make the final decision.
_alex_ -> Great idea to include the top themes with the highest overall votes in Intrepid!
I know a lot of hard work is being done on a new theme manager and hopefully it will be ready for the 8.10 release.

oh **** those are good! I like http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/2631616390_a1c79cb507_b.jpg best, but i also love the "glossy" effect. Is it possible to add some glossy effects?...
...well I know it is possible, but OMG! Those themes are good!

oh wait, sry it is the same theme just one picture is zoomed right?
|

I'm against it. Community voting for such kind of things tends to give preferences to mediocre and uninspirational themes (at best). Eurovision song contest, anybody?

I think we should just let the theme be chosen by whoever is in charge of Graphics.
But, I'd like it if the highest voted theme was included in the distribution CD.
|
|
|
I voted against. The default theme is too important for the first impression to be chosen by a popularity contest.
But why not both? Let the default theme be chosen by the small group, and have the 'community choice' as an easy to install alternative, clearly marked as such.
|
|
|
|
my previous comment was when i viewed the idea, having read the idea a second time im compelled to say that it would indeed be better if the thems that make it into the release were chosen by the small group, although a theme brainstorm would be very cool, with selected reasonable themes making it into the final release as optional.
|
|
|
Those are nice themes, but themes should not be chosen by a popularity contest.
Just go to gnome-look.org and sort by "highest rated", and you'll see why. Nevermind that it's too easy to skew the results.
|
|
|
Good idea +1. But what if upon installation you could choose. I.e.
"Would you like the default Ubuntu Theme or the Community Favorite?"
And then give pics of both. It would just need to pop up upon first startup.

developers comment plz.........
although i like the idea but it adds more clutter to brainstorm.but nice if implemented in sub categories.look and feel>>mockups

I like the idea very much but I also think that whatever ubuntu will ship with, it will have to be a default theme that is also very acceptable for the corporate desktop. In the end, that is where the money will be to continue this free project.

This is very similar to my idea (Idea #10016: A more productive site for submitting Ubuntu artwork - http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10016/) but the screenshots are amazing.
I really hope this gets implemented.

Yeah this would be great!
I want the community to choose the default theme too! :)
|
|
|
Good idea AND
Think that the first look can make a newbie coming to Ubuntu or to remaining under Windows.
Hope the default theme will be more consensual than the previous ones...

This is tough, but -1. I think Vadim and aethralis are right, the people may not have the artistic eye to choose what is best.

Great great idea. A large number of new users to Ubuntu hate the default Human theme. It should be decided by actual users, not a small committee.
|
|
|
I think this would be a good idea, but it would have to be very structured. For example, only moderators, (or developers, or whoever's in charge here at Brainstorm), could submit themes. These themes would be WORKING themes submitted to the devs. Then the devs THEMSELVES would take screenshots, to make sure the screen shots actually show off the theme, and not other applications, (one of the reasons WallLight looks so great is because of AWN and Widgets, which are not actually part of the theme). Plus, maybe all themes should have the same wallpaper? (So people don't vote just because of the wallpaper) Or, for even more work for the devs, make categorical voting, so you vote on all aspects of the theme, which all add to a total average. Also, I think a new theme should be TOTALLY new, because some might not like a certain theme just because the icon set in the screenshot is not what they like.
Anyway, all of this would be A LOT of work for Brainstorm to implement, so I don't think it's going to happen.

Wow! Great idea! It definitely looks very good.
Though gnome-look.org exactly does this (And also has voting), I'd personally prefer them to be here.
