Idea #10568: Make the startup from GDM to Gnome (completely started desktop) more smooth

Rationale
Currently the Ubuntu startup process is quite nice from Grub to GDM. But once I log in, from GDM to a completely started Gnome desktop (where all the panels and applets and icons on the desktop are started) I see a brown background for a while, then the wallpaper appears, and the upper and lower panels start to show up, it stays like this a couple of seconds, then applets start to appear, and finally Gnome finishes starting. It would be more smooth, if we could have a nice progress indicator while Gnome is starting, and once everything is started, then display the desktop and panels. Maybe with nice looking transitions (fade in/out).

One major improvement in my humble opinion that's very easy to implement ourselves is going to system > admin > login window > local and changing the background color to black.

There was a great panel in previous version of Gnome which indicate which program was launching.

It was removed for Ubuntu and it's strange that now, it is asked from users :-)

Maybe adding again this package which shows the program loading and blind the rest of the window will make you happy.

Anyway, I prefer to have to fastest link to menu br instead of a smooth launching and a longer time of waiting... but I agree that display of gnome bars can look better while launching.

I agree that it is very important to make it faster too, but my point is, that it would look nicer if the desktop with all the panels, applets and icons would start in the background perhaps and then when everything is ready to be used (the applets and icons and all starts to accept user input), then display the whole stuff at once with a fade in effect (or something else, like gliding the panels in from the edges of the screen or whatever nice effect you can think of). It is not even necessary to have these effects, only just do not display anything (except a progress indicator) until everything has started (reached a usable state) in the backround, and once all is ready, then display them at once.

Add an option to not only select a background color but place your wallpaper as background when an user logs in.
When a user enters his password, his wallpaper should appear and then all the desktop stuff

I posted an idea a while back about having some sort of progress bar show after entering your login info showing the status of the desktop, so that once it was done you could have a fully-ready desktop right away

Intrepid does improve the boot process overall by bringing in the wallpaper earlier - so kudos for that!

However it's still a bit weird and off putting going from a nicely laid out GDM/login screen to a plain colour and a loading indicator/circle type deal.

It's just a visual let down for the user, after keying in details you naturally expect to see more happening on screen, not less.

Just imagine if you opened your front door at home and couldn't see anything for a few seconds (well, err in the daytime I mean!).

Someone mentioned changing the colour and I often do that, black works well I agree there - though I think really it's not a great solution.

Even adding a splash screen gives the impression that somethings going on...

I know the devs can think up a great soltuion and do something truly innovative!
