Brainstorm needs a 'Question of the Week' -style poll.

Each week Brainstorm should feature a question that is on the minds of the developers and leaders of the Ubuntu project. I'm thinking, questions like:
* In your opinion, what is the 'weakest link' in Hardy Heron or Ibex (Alpha)?
* Which of the following areas would you like to see Ubuntu excel in .... a) b) c) ?
* How can we make the release of Ibex go smoother and generate more excitement than Hardy's release?
Apart from being good conversation starters, these questions can give the Ubuntu developers a platform to publicly address issues and concerns that matter to them, while also providing inspiration for other relevant brainstorm ideas.

I think it would be nice to have full sound support in as many usb headset brands as we can. More specifically, it is nice to have sound not only when we listen to music or watch movies, but more specifically on the internet, in Firefox. Usb headsets don't have sound when we watch a video on youtube e.t.c. This is really annoying and believe we should fix it.

"Not planning to do X" should not be a reason to close an idea.

An idea "do X" shouldn't be closed just because "There are no plans to do X." This is the case for idea #525: make thunderbird the default email client.
How can the community describe its wants and needs if the admins close ideas just because Canonical is not planning to change something the community clearly wants.

Have a section on brainstorm where we can see the top 10 developer picks for the month. This will do many things:
1. Get developers to see and pay attention to this website. (I hope that they already do)
2. Let the community know that the developers actually do see and pay attention to this website.
3. Draw support or opposition to ideas that developers may be thinking about including in the next release.
4. Let the community know what sort of things that the developers are interested in seeing in Ubuntu :D
5. Give positive feedback to the contributors by letting them know that they made the top 10, even if their idea takes a long time or never actually gets implemented.

Create a community fund which people can donate to and is used to pay for fixes

I suggest the creation of a community fund which people can donate to via paypal (and/or other major electronic payment services), which is then used to pay for fixes. For example, 1 vote could be worth 1 dollar, then when a fix is provided - the code is checked and tested and then the fixer is contacted by the administrators (either by email or PM) and asked to provide a paypal account so the money may be transferred.
Perhaps this could be tied into the Ubuntu Magazine idea ( http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7904/ ), so that $5 from every sale go toward the fund.
I am a free software advocate but I think it would be very helpful if developers could make some money from helping out - so they can spare the time to do so.
This is the general idea, there might be small problems - like if two fixes were suggested at once, or many original fixes suggested, but then I think it depends on how well the fund did to whether we could be liberal with the money and pay the 'runner-up ideas' a quarter or so of the bounty (in addition to the chosen fixer getting the full bounty).

Merge Separate Windows Into Multi-Tabbed Window

For programs with tabbed functionality, allow separate windows to be merged into one multi-tabbed window.
e.g Having multiple gnome-terminal windows open a "Retach Tab"
function can be added to the Tabs menu.

Linux should develop the platform for device drivers, not drivers itself

Ubuntu and all other Linux distributions tries to implement drivers at kernel level or something like that...
Why linux volunteers write driver ?
Linux should prepare only platform for device driver, not write driver code itself...
after the driver platform, any volunteer may develop driver, but DEVICE VENDORS SHOULD BE encouraged and helped to write drivers for Linux using that driver platform...

Use Captcha for first few user ideas and comments

There is a growing number of spammers on brainstorm. I propose that for the first dozen ideas or comments that a user makes, that he is required to answer a captcha/re-captcha.
This will help prevent the use of bots to spam comments on thousands of ideas, whilst inconveniencing real users the least. We must reduce the possibility that people may use scripts to spam brainstorm with thousands of spam messages, before it happens! Nothing works better then an active defense.

Recycle bin doesn't show contents of folders

Assume I have deleted a folder containing some files and it has been moved to the trash can. Also, some other individual files may have been deleted. When looking at the contents of the trash it will just show the folder and the individual items. It's very difficult to know that there may be items within the folder (that is, the folder is not empty). The only way to check this is to select all of the items or to go into the folder. This is a cumbersome way of doing things if there are many items in the trash can.
Perhaps a better way would be to default the view to list (where you can see the items), or somehow list all items within subfolders (aka windows recycle bin).

more cooperation between Ubuntu(Studio) and constantvzw.org

some issues i considered interesting:
. some IBM people and even Mark Shuttleworth recognized Design has a main key on the next Linux versions.
. the appearance of an Ubuntu sub-distribution like UbuntuStudio is an example of how welcome an Ubuntu-based distribution focusing this target is so welcome.
. intiatives in the academic and professional areas of graphic design, video edition, music, arts, architecture, etc., like from http://constantvzw.org (their Linux users seems to be mostly Ubuntu users) shown us how needed Linux is in these areas, so strongly dominated by Adobe and Autodesk monopolies and lobbies. Cooperation between Ubuntu community and a so enthusiastic and quality-targeted initiative constantvzw.org is would be awesome!

What to do with Ideas that aren't Ideas...

So, its nice that things are marked not and idea or duplicate or spam or done or whatever. But why are they still there? They just clutter everything up.
Ideas that are marked should not show up unless you are searching for them. They make a mess out of the popular, latests, and random lists.
Anything marked as not an idea should be deleted, or at least moved to another section of the website as an example of a bad submission.
Dupes should be overwritten with just a link to the original idea.
Bugs should be moved to their own section, or deleted.
Basically, things that don't really have any need for a vote should be pushed out of the public eye, allowing better ideas to be exposed.

Flag users with many similar comments/ideas as possible spammers

Spammers generally post the same messages over and over again on dozens of ideas. Brainstorm should be capable of analysing users posts, determining how unique each of their posts are, and then flagging the user if their posts are all very similar (as it would strongly suggest they are spamming).
This would provide a mechanism for spammers to be identified quickly, whilst forcing spammers to resort to posting real comments, and hiding the spam within them (inefficient in the spamming world), signing up to thousands of accounts, and post using different account names (but, account creation uses a captcha stopping that), or dumping random words within it (which will make the messages immediately obvious they contain spam).
If we don't immediately get on top of the problem now, we will have no mechanism in place to protect against spam bots.

Option to exclude Brainstorm category from searches

Right now, with Advanced Search a user can narrow searches to an individual category or all categories at once.
It would be useful to have an option to "Exclude brainstorm ideas" from a search.
Perhaps another checkbox right under the "Show Duplicates" option. Or another choice in the category combo-box... search "all categories except Brainstorm".
This way users can zero in on ideas that are unrelated to Brainstorm-- and benefit from faster searches, too.
