A fast and reliable remote desktop

Dear friends,
I think that Ubuntu should implement a remote desktop application which can be used over networks as slow as dial-up internet connections.
This application should be reliable and easy to use.
Many are the uses for a remote desktop and include helping family, friends and co-workers, providing commercial technical support and helping out users in IRC.
Vino and Vinagre are included in the default desktop installation but Vinagre is unable to reduce the image quality as a trade-off to increase speed. This is reported as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203782 . This makes it unusable even for broadband users because it requires too much upload bandwidth.
VNC clients other than Vinagre can't connect to Vino. This is reported as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369181 . UPDATE: This isn't true. VNC clients CAN connect to Vino.
Many blessings.
Solution #2:
Replace Vinagre with xvncviewer (or other alternative).
Vinagre may be easy to use, but from what I've seen, it is not very feature-full compared to many of it's competitors.
It may be easier to simply improve the UI of another application and use it instead.

Solution #3:
Replace Vinagre with Gnome-RDP

Not sure if development on this tool continues, but even the 2-year-old version of Gnome-RDP allows you to tweak compression settings, connect via RDP, VNC, or SSH, save profiles, and a LOT of other things that are not really there in Vinagre.

Solution #4:

One usefull feature is NAT to NAT (
http://www.uvnc.com/addons/nat2nat.html ) like ultraVNC.
It is INCREDIBLE USEFULL, easy to connect to a PCs behind ROUTERS without opening ports.
For example, this tool is very very important to remote help people and teach. I use this tool everyday.
I found a similar tool at www.echogent.com but is not complete free.

Add FreeNX as a default remote desktop...It's great, with clients available for windows and linux

It beats most of these suggestions head-to-head for performance:

It's in the repos already and works well for my experience with VNC and RDP. It has 5 protocols already including remote X and "over SSH" options for most protocols.
