AFP-folders cannot be added to nautilus bookmarks (only their subfolders)

When mounting a server //server/sharefolder/subfolder, you can add "subfolder" as a bookmark to nautilus. Unfortunately, the "sharefolder" itself cannot be dragged to the bookmarks.

Solution #1: Allow "sharefolder" to be dragged to bookmarks
Written by kalsan the 27 May 12 at 06:49.
Drag&Drop should add "sharefolder" to the bookmarks, just like it works with "subfolder".

Workspace Switcher, Trash icons should be moveable

It is not possible to move or delete Workspace Switcher, Trash icons in Ubuntu 12.04.

I would like to have Workspace Switcher icon as the first icon (or second if we count with Dash icon). I have many icons in Unity panel and I need to scroll down and find Workspace Switcher icon to be able to click it with mouse.

I would also like to remove Trash icon completely to make space for app icon.

Make Workspace Switcher, Trash icons moveable and removable or just enable them to be configurable.

Open new app window where it was saved last time

It is really annoying to move/resize newly run app window to the position that is comfortable for me again and again.

Ubuntu doesn't currently support remembering the position and the size of all app windows.

Several cases:

I run "Terminal" and move it to my comfort position to the left bottom of the screen. After some time I close it. When I run it again it opens somewhere else and I need to move it again to the left bottom. And that happens again and again.

Surprisingly, it works for LibreOffice Calc. This app remembers its position and size. Probably because it was implemented by the app and it decides where to display. But what if I want to display all app in the center? For LibreOffice Calc it wouldn't work.

It would be good to set this behavior in one place for all apps, eventually add some exceptions if are needed.

Solution #2: System should save window position by default
Written by pinggi the 23 May 12 at 20:35.
The system should save the window position by default when an app closes if a user changed the window position or its size.

It can be turned off and the system can place windows by "smart" strategy as it is now set in compiz, but I think it's not ideal.

An app can still change the window position and the size of course. The position is set by the system only when a window is created and has no position yet.

The system also handles situations like changing screen resolution when the window position could be out of the bounds, etc.

Solution #3: New option in 'Place Windows' Compiz plugin
Written by pinggi the 26 May 12 at 12:03.
Add a new option 'Last window position' in 'Place Windows' Compiz plugin.

Currently there are following options in Placement Mode:

Cascade
Centered
Smart
Maximize
Random
Pointer

The new option would solve the problem for all windows.

Better behavior of 2 panels in Nautilus

Written by pinggi the 26 May 12 at 16:08. Related project: Nautilus. Awaiting moderation
If I turn on 2 panels in Nautilus (press F3) in "Compact" view and some of the files or folders have longer names than the width of the window, the horizontal column position jumps when the cursor moves in the list (or if the cursor is on the first item and a user presses the up arrow key).

Column may start more in the left, so that half of icons is not visible. I am not sure if it is a feature to display end of the file name or it is a bug.

There are also problems when users go with the cursor from the right column to the left column and decide to rename a file. The textbox is displayed cut from the left, so users can't see even the beginning of the file name which they are renaming.

It would be also suitable to support shortcuts (F5 - copy, F6 - move, TAB - switch between panels) as it is usual in file managers. Because if we have 2 panels in Nautilus, it is difficult to switch between them or manage files by keyboard.

Solution #1: Fixed position and support for common key shortcuts
Written by pinggi the 26 May 12 at 16:08.
Ensure that column position from the left is fixed and doesn't change. Implement also standard key shortcuts when Nautilus is in 2 panels mode.

Nautilus - left, right arrows

Written by pinggi the 22 May 12 at 22:15. Related project: Nautilus. Awaiting moderation
I would like to improve the keyboard controling of Nautilus.
When Nautilus displays folders and files in "Compact" view, there might be more columns shown because the whole list of folders and files is too long and cant't fit to the window.

You are able to move the cursor with arrow keys. Usually we have the right hand on arrow keys and index finger on enter key. Imagine that you have 3 columns in Nautilus and your cursor is in the middle of the second column. You want to move the cursor to the second item in the first column because it is a folder and you want to get into.

In case of usual file managers, I would press left (to get to the first column), left (to get to the first item), down (to get to the second item) and enter key (to go into the folder itself) with only one hand without any need to move hand around the keyboard. It is very fast this way.

Unfortunately, Nautilus does nothing when I am in the first column and press the left key. The same situation is when I am in the last column and press the right key. I would expect that the cursor will go to the last item, but Nautilus doesn't do anything again.

Solution #1: Move cursor to the first item or last item
Written by pinggi the 22 May 12 at 22:15.
Move cursor to the first item if the user presses the left key and the cursor is in the most left column.

Move cursor to the last item if the user presses right key and the cursor is in the most right column.

Have sound Menu Buttons utilize HUD

Written by Daniel Brainard the 20 May 12 at 02:11. Related project: Unity. Awaiting moderation
HUD is able to search all the menus in the panel; including those in app-indicators. For instance, if I want to play a certain playlist, it is accesible from HUD. I would like to see better media control from using HUD. If I would like to pause, or skip a song, I want to do it fast. Currently right now, because these actions are buttons within the sound menu, they cannot be used with HUD.

Solution #1: port the media control
Written by Daniel Brainard the 20 May 12 at 02:11.
I would like to see the buttons for media players in the sound menu utilize HUD commands. So if I would like to pause the song I'm listening to, I can just hit alt and type pause. The same goes for next, previous and play. It shouldn't be too difficult because any menu within the panel is accessible using HUD, just not the buttons for the media player.

compiz easy setup

Written by TOM TOM the 22 May 12 at 15:33. Related project: Xubuntu. Awaiting moderation
I propose an option to "enable desktop effects" that automatically installs and sets up compiz for the user.

Compiz effects enhance the traditional desktop paradigm.
They are useful (eg the zoom function) and have the "wow" factor (eg wobbly windows).

Even though Compiz is fairly popular and useful, it's not very straightforward to setup in Xubuntu especially for a new user.

One caveat is that xfce workspace switcher doesn't work with compiz unless expo and desktop wall is enabled. It's impossible to add or remove workspaces with compiz running.

Solution #1: option to "enable desktop effects"
Written by TOM TOM the 22 May 12 at 15:33.
In xfce desktop settings there could be such an option
which -if selected and the hardware supports it- could automatically do the following:

1. install the packages: compizconfig-settings-manager, compiz-gnome, gnome-themes-standard

2. set up window decorations, movement, placement, resize and grid to be handled by compiz.

3. autostart "sleep 2s; compiz --replace ccp"
