Include prior kernels in the repositories
Written by lewac the 7 May 12 at 15:38. New
Recently we upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10, kubuntu 32 bit. And lost google-earth in the process (OS freezes). There's a bug report on it but its not fixed yet. So to make things a bit easier why not retain a coupla previous kernels within the repositories? That way what worked prior to updates/upgrades will probably work again (if it happens to be a kernel issue like this one).

One may require some type of "Regress" checkbox within the package maintainers (synaptic, muon, whatever)... or a new source list could be implemented to make the prior kernel(s) available.

Of course would not normally regress unless a specific app critical to normal usage went bust from a subsequent kernel update (such as was my (and many others) situation).

Increase kernel ram support up to 16GB in x86 arch
Written by przem the 19 Sep 08 at 19:35. New
Increase amount of ram supported by kernel from 4GB up to 16GB for x86 architecture.

Lot of people buys computers with at least 4gb ram, so to use full power they need to recompile the kernel every time update comes.

I'm one of them, system sees normaly only 3GB of ram, but after kernel recompilation, which was a pain i must say, everything works as it should.

so please do the small change, so we users will not need to do it everytime.

best regards,
przem

kernel updates
Written by euklidis the 29 Aug 08 at 18:04. New
Make an extra repository for latest kernels. Many of us have problems with devices that are not compatible with the kernel. Some of these problems are solved with the next kernel. For example my atheros works with 2.6.25 but i am stack with 2.6.24 and i had to wait for 6 months to get a new kernel and have my wifi working. There sould be a repo for kernel updates and the users will have the choice to activate it or not.

Solution #2: Whitelist packages from repos
Written by tgm4883 the 16 Jan 09 at 07:51.
Make synaptic/apt-get/update-manager rely on whitelists to only install/update packages from a certain repo if it is on the whitelist. Then you could add the repo for the next version of ubuntu and whitelist the kernel.
