Relation between applications and files is kind of outdated

A system is composed of files and applications using them. Traditionally, we do not separate them but access them all through one window after another. Most mobile systems solve this by application-driven hence just depreciating the file manager, while most desktop systems still use "file manager", "find", "desktop shortcuts" or other ways to search down a file.
A simplified and unified way would do much help.

Solution #1: Divide virtual desktop into two: upper (tasks) and lower (files)
Written by 738678 the 27 May 12 at 13:15.
The running applications will always be at the conceptual upper.
The file manager stays at bottom, and act as a dock-like application switcher if not triggered.

This architecture will be multi-device accessible. On mobile, it help get rid of "Home" buttons, and much intuitive than any other virtual "buttons."

As a task switcher.

Bookmarks or history are 'site' type files.

When triggered, it goes up.

Workspace Switcher, Trash icons should be moveable

It is not possible to move or delete Workspace Switcher, Trash icons in Ubuntu 12.04.

I would like to have Workspace Switcher icon as the first icon (or second if we count with Dash icon). I have many icons in Unity panel and I need to scroll down and find Workspace Switcher icon to be able to click it with mouse.

I would also like to remove Trash icon completely to make space for app icon.

Open new app window where it was saved last time

It is really annoying to move/resize newly run app window to the position that is comfortable for me again and again.

Ubuntu doesn't currently support remembering the position and the size of all app windows.

Several cases:

I run "Terminal" and move it to my comfort position to the left bottom of the screen. After some time I close it. When I run it again it opens somewhere else and I need to move it again to the left bottom. And that happens again and again.

Surprisingly, it works for LibreOffice Calc. This app remembers its position and size. Probably because it was implemented by the app and it decides where to display. But what if I want to display all app in the center? For LibreOffice Calc it wouldn't work.

It would be good to set this behavior in one place for all apps, eventually add some exceptions if are needed.

Solution #2: System should save window position by default
Written by pinggi the 23 May 12 at 20:35.
The system should save the window position by default when an app closes if a user changed the window position or its size.

It can be turned off and the system can place windows by "smart" strategy as it is now set in compiz, but I think it's not ideal.

An app can still change the window position and the size of course. The position is set by the system only when a window is created and has no position yet.

The system also handles situations like changing screen resolution when the window position could be out of the bounds, etc.

Solution #3: New option in 'Place Windows' Compiz plugin
Written by pinggi the 26 May 12 at 12:03.
Add a new option 'Last window position' in 'Place Windows' Compiz plugin.

Currently there are following options in Placement Mode:

Cascade
Centered
Smart
Maximize
Random
Pointer

The new option would solve the problem for all windows.

Login time settings

There should be the same login time displayed (24h/12h, time zone, language) as it is displayed after a user signs in.

Currently users can see e.g. "4:50 pm" in the login screen top bar and after they are logged in they see "16:50".

Display the same time as a user has currently set.
I suppose only one user occupying the system (laptop).

Have sound Menu Buttons utilize HUD
0/1

Written by Daniel Brainard the 20 May 12 at 02:11. Awaiting moderation
HUD is able to search all the menus in the panel; including those in app-indicators. For instance, if I want to play a certain playlist, it is accesible from HUD. I would like to see better media control from using HUD. If I would like to pause, or skip a song, I want to do it fast. Currently right now, because these actions are buttons within the sound menu, they cannot be used with HUD.

Solution #1: port the media control
Written by Daniel Brainard the 20 May 12 at 02:11.
I would like to see the buttons for media players in the sound menu utilize HUD commands. So if I would like to pause the song I'm listening to, I can just hit alt and type pause. The same goes for next, previous and play. It shouldn't be too difficult because any menu within the panel is accessible using HUD, just not the buttons for the media player.
