Add a bookstore to Ubuntu One
Written by mdhunn the 22 Nov 10 at 00:10. New
With Fictionwise being slowly pushed under by Kindle and Nook, perhaps it's time to add a bookstore with little or no DRM to Ubuntu. The thing that Fictionwise is really good about is making it very clear which books are encrypted and which are not. Furthermore, books encrypted for eReader are encrypted to a user name and password, not a specific copy of Adobe's Digital Editions.

I can still read all but ten or so of the hundreds of books I've bought from Fictionwise over the last decade. I don't trust Adobe to provide a similar experience with it's DRM service.

Solution #1: Add a bookstore to Ubuntu One
Written by mdhunn the 22 Nov 10 at 00:10.
Add a bookstore to Ubuntu One with a focus on making a users library as future proof as possible by using no DRM and no iTunes like limits on the number of devices that a book may be registered on. When a publisher cannot be persuaded not to use DRM, use DRM that encrypts to a password chosen by a user, not to a specific device. Thus a users ability to read his books long into the future is largely limited by his ability to curate his own files.

* By his I mean his or her, call me lazy.

Solution #2: First have a nice ebook reader, and functional screen rotation
Written by Gonz-IT the 13 Dec 10 at 13:03.
By a nice ebook reader I mean one that visually integrates well with gnome/unity, supports many ebook formats, and most of all, has a rotate function that rotates not only the screen but also the touchpad. In Display Settings we already have a rotate function but it's pretty much useless beacause it doesn't rotate the touchpad axis.

Prepaid Cards for Ubuntu One Music Store
Written by Chrissss the 26 Feb 10 at 17:22. New
In Germany you can pay downloads within the Ubuntu One Music Store with credit card and the payment services firstgate, Click&Buy and PayPal. Many of those services do have a bad reputation and/or need also a credit card. Because of this many people without credit cards won't be able to buy music.

Solution #1: Sell prepaid cards in shops
Written by Chrissss the 26 Feb 10 at 17:22.
With prepaid cards (like the ones iTunes uses) you could bring the Ubuntu One Music Store much more publicity and enable people without credit cards (e.g. kids) to buy music inside the Ubuntu One Music Store.

Ubuntu one music store doesn't support unlimited streaming of music.
Written by terrax the 16 Dec 10 at 16:11. New
In Denmark we have several popular music services, where you are able to stream all the music you want for a monthly fee. That is not possible in Ubuntu one music store (rythmbox).

Solution #1: Implement a monthly fee and give unlimited access to music.
Written by terrax the 16 Dec 10 at 16:11.
It would be great if Ubuntu implemented a monthly fee system, such that you would have unlimited stream access of the all the music in ubuntu one's music store.

In my country we have several very successfully streaming services doing just that.

Ubuntu One support for Thunderbird
Written by ekevu the 15 Feb 12 at 20:48. New
Thunderbird gets in Version 13 alpha Dropbox support. It means, that you don\\\'t have to send the whole big file anymore, it will be uploaded to your Dropbox and the recipient gets just the download link.

Solution #2: Ubuntu One support for syncing any random folder or file
Written by puxkggn the 25 Feb 12 at 19:38.
Add support in Ubuntu One for syncing any random folder or file, kinda like Dropbox.

This would allow to do the same thing but with everything! Not just Thunderbird.
Move the file to one of the synchronized folders with drag and drop from Thunderbird.

And it's already implemented too!!!

Ubuntu One: better login protection
Written by ekevu the 7 Jan 12 at 09:54. New
The files you uploaded to your Ubuntu One cloud may contain sensitive information. Someone who has found out your password can access these files. There might be a way to make this way safer.

Solution #1: Use 2-step-verification (like Google)
Written by ekevu the 7 Jan 12 at 09:54.
Google uses optional 2-step-verification for your account. Having entered your password on another computer than your own, you have to enter a code created by your mobile phone. So anyone who found out your password won't be able to access your files in Ubuntu One.
Solution: make a similar option available for Ubuntu One.

Solution #2: What about adding a Captcha Verification or PGP Key...
Written by jmate24 the 15 Jan 12 at 04:54.
Use a Captcha (m4+3eUz.) When you first sign up and a personal PGP Key that is for your computer only and make sure that the PGP Key is on a small USB Flash drive. Also to recover from a re-install when you lost your key (flash drive) have 4 personal questions about yourself that you only know the answer to so you may recover that key. also any application that uses U1 will have a key that is generated for that applications use only; and that matches your PGP key but is not your key and have this key come from U1. and also have the ability to register an application with U1 like you register Banshee with Last.fm's webpage.

Solution #3: Use a pin code for your mobile phone
Written by ekevu the 16 Jan 12 at 10:00.
Adding to my solution #1, I'd like to propose using a pin code when you access the mobile Ubuntu One application (like in dropbox app). So anybody using your phone won't be able to see your files without the correct code.

cloud online storage and loss of control of data
Written by cryos82 the 21 Mar 11 at 11:36. New
in this way is possible to use a remote cloud-based storage like a local storage, in this way we can use softwares like TrueCrypt to obtain a remote secure storage.

In this way we are sure that nobody can modify or view our files, because in my opinion cloud based storage have the problem of the loss of control of the data.

Sync system preferences and installed application list to Ubuntu One
Written by optimus55 the 17 Nov 10 at 20:24. New
Ubuntu currently lacks a proper backup system but yet linux system settings are usually the most modified. However, with Ubuntu one cloud storage built in, critical system files, eg. Xorg.conf, etc can be encrypted and stored online in a compressed format.

Then if your pc crashes, you reinstall OS etc, then you can restore all your settings from the ubuntu one sync.

Solution #1: Ask the user if he wants to sync system preferences on first boot.
Written by optimus55 the 17 Nov 10 at 20:24.
Show a menu message asking user to sync his/her system settings to ubuntu one.

If yes, show a sync dialog with with sync time preference (every day, once a week, once a month, etc) and a sync now button.

(settings include video config files, sound config files, any other important system files and a list of all installed applications)

Compress, encrypt and upload.

If the user chooses to restore their settings, Ubuntu One restores all their important system files and asks if they would also like to download all their recently install applications.

This works perfectly on android and I never worry about losing my data/preferences because it's all synced.
