Grub OS list
Written by jfbucas the 5 Nov 08 at 11:20. New
When you already have another OS installed on your system, installing Ubuntu makes a non-comfortable Grub menu list :

| Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27...
| Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27... (recovery mode)
| Ubuntu 8.10 memtest86+
| Other operating systems:
| Windows...

And if you ran kernel-updates, you may end with a big and messy menu.

I think this should be nice and sharp like this :

| Ubuntu Intrepid
| Windows
|
| Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.4246...
| Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.28.rc37...
| Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27...
| Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27... (recovery mode)
| Ubuntu 8.10 memtest86+

Ubuntu Intrepid would be an entry to /boot/vmlinuz
/boot/vmlinuz would be a link to the latest kernel available.

a. I know it is possible to tweak the menu.lst file but, we should not have to do it
b. I feel like the number and importance of the entries in this menu, coming from the Ubuntu installation, are somehow disrespectful of the other OSes
c. I believe the purpose of a multi-boot menu is to enable access to all the OS, in a clean and efficient way

Theme Wizard
Written by tonyzbj42 the 29 Oct 08 at 18:31. New
The impression I get around the Internet is that people either love or hate the default brown theme in Ubuntu.
While we all know that this is easily changed, first impressions do count, so I've had this thought. I don't know if this has already been suggested.
Looking at Linux Mint's way of an introduction 'wizard' when the operating system is first used, how about a similar wizard in Ubuntu where a new user can choose from a pre-selection of themes (blue, dark, etc. in a window similar to the background selection pane (or something).
I think this would prevent the derogatory comments that are being made about in places about Ubuntu being brown, and post install wizards of different nature are not uncommon these days (Pardus, etc.).

Solution #2: 1st Time Boot Up Wizard Menu
Written by adamknox the 15 Sep 09 at 04:51.
I think that after the first installation (or boot in, if it is just a new user), a simple wizard should boot up. Most importantly this wizard should have an "Ask me next time" button.

This wizard can allow the person to pick from a few color themes (I think four is a nice round number) or/and be redirected to user created content online. I think there should be a few matching background images to choose from for each color theme.

I could see this evolving into an option where the user finds a background online and then colors are pulled from the image to create a color theme, but this would still be a huge first step!
