Ubuntu torrents should have web seeds
Written by Otus the 9 Aug 09 at 15:42. New
Rarer Ubuntu torrents - especially development releases and other *buntu torrents - have few or no seeds. Therefore one has to use the direct download instead to download them.

This could easily be solved with web seeds. The web seeds extensions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol)#Web_seeding) to BitTorrent allow the client to download from a web server, when there are no peers. This is supported in many clients, including Transmission.

Solution #1: Add web seeds to Ubuntu torrents
Written by Otus the 9 Aug 09 at 15:42.
The official Ubuntu torrents should include web seed(s).

The GetRight version of the protocol (http://getright.com/seedtorrent.html) can be implemented by only modifying the .torrent file. The BitTornado version (http://bittornado.com/docs/webseed-spec.txt) requires some additional scripting on server side.

Ask user if he/she wants to download blocklist when first starting Transmission.
Written by arckeda the 28 Dec 08 at 09:55. New
Transmission is the default bittorrent client for Ubuntu. There is a little known feature that allows you to download a blocklist stopping you from connection to IP addresses of known organizations that would monitor your bittorrent activity. Many users don't know about this feature. When first starting transmission, they should be asked if they want to use it or not. The download process takes a little time, but in my opinion, (And according to studies of bittorrent monitoring) it is worth it.

It would also be nice if we could see a 0 to 100 percent complete bar while downloading the blocklist.

Please don't comment saying that the only people who would benefit from this are pirates. Privacy is always a major concern, and I would rather not have corporations monitoring me, regardless of what I am downloading. As the makers of Ubuntu, Canonical should support privacy.

Solution #2: Just enable it by default; many first-time users won't know what a blocklist is
Written by charles the 14 Aug 09 at 19:14.
I think the best solution is to leave blocklists as they currently are, disabled by default and without a popup dialog.

But *if* making the blocklist more prominent is a popular idea, IMO turning turning it on by default is closer to Transmission's "Just Works" design than a popup dialog. Many first-time users won't know what a blocklist is, and that's not the first thing they should see when starting Transmission.

Transmission should have a option to pause torrents when on battery power
Written by Teester the 6 Nov 09 at 00:59. New
Uploading and downloading torrents results in disk, CPU and network activity, which will tend to increase the speed at which a battery drains if a laptop is on battery power. When Transmission is idle, it uses less resources than when it is actively uploading and downloading, prolonging battery life.

Solution #1: Add a "Pause torrents when on battery power" option to Transmission preferences.
Written by Teester the 6 Nov 09 at 00:59.
Add a checkbox to Transmission Preferences under the torrents tab labelled "Pause torrents when on battery power". When checked, all torrents would be paused when the computer is on battery power, and resumed when the computer is plugged back in. The checkbox should only be present when a battery is detected (so that an irrelevant checkbox is not presented to desktop users)

Transmission : show number of seeders
Written by cudjoe the 2 Oct 08 at 17:17. New
Before stopping to seed my torrents, I usually check the number of seeders.
Currently, the user must open Detail dialog > Peers Tab.
What about adding this information on main panel along to ratio ?

Download priority

Solution #1: Use bandwidth and QoS features of Linux to "nice" Transmission
Written by coyeeg the 23 Jun 10 at 21:12.
Linux has all kinds of fancy networking features and surely one of them must be process-based prioritization of network traffic just like there is CPU and I/O prioritization. Transmission should have an option to "nice" itself. Just throttling the download rate does not help as much as I would like and it is also otherwise sub-optimal because it's easy to forget to reset the throttle when you are done surfing.

Have Transmission use emblems on folders to show you the state of a download
Written by Aphoxema the 8 Nov 08 at 15:48. New
It would be very helpful to, well... myself and I'm sure other people if Transmission would set emblems on folders or files based on what they're doing. It could set one emblem when the download starts and one when it's completed so you know when it's safe to relocate the folder or file without having to go back and forth from Transmission.

The most useful thing about this is it doesn't depend on Transmission to be running to keep you informed on the status of the file, you wouldn't have to open transmission to see if that file you just started downloading and forgot about was done or not.

Colour-coded progress bars in Transmission
Written by futwick the 20 Dec 08 at 12:57. New
The progress bars in GTK+ version of Transmission are now all the same colour whether a torrent is downloading or seeding. When you have a lot of active torrents this makes it hard to tell them apart.

It wasn't always like this. I believe older versions of Transmission used non-GTK+ progress bars but the developer says he got "complaints that Transmission doesn't integrate properly with the rest of the desktop" and so changed them to GTK+ progress bars that match the system theme but don't support multiple colours ( http://forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?p=22144#p22144 ).

I understand his frustration but I think the usability advantage of colour-coding far outweighs the aesthetic problem of it not perfectly matching the system theme.

Compare the Mac OSX version ( http://www.transmissionbt.com/images/screenshots/mac-large.png ) with the GTK+ version ( http://www.transmissionbt.com/images/screenshots/gtk-large.png ). It is much harder to tell apart the downloading and seeding torrents in the GTK+ screenshot.

So my idea is this: bring back colour-coding or provide another at-a-glance way to distinguish downloading from seeding torrents.

Bittorent Client & a good download manager should be together
Written by fazillatheef the 9 Jul 08 at 11:41. New
Currently there is bittorent client(Transmission) by default in hardy ...

but it would be also good to include a download manager with it.The following features should be included

*it should be included with Transmission gui itself,no need for another program. It gives a feeling for the user that the program is used for downloading purposes.

*Download file in parts. This is used by download accelerators.I know that D4x is there. But its too flashy with many icons and the UI looks really bad.It needs to be standardized like Transmission .And I have experienced lot of problems(confusion) with it.

*Integeration with firefox using some plugin (this should be by default). So a popup comes up asking whether it should be downloaded by the download manager or firefox itself

*Settings for Automatic hang up and shutdown after downloads are finished.some thing like a check box.(make it simple).

Solution #2: Transmission bittorrent client extension.
Written by cracken226 the 7 May 09 at 19:14.
Preferred client in all Ubuntu systems should have more options, be pluginable, but still light, powerfull as Ktorrent. All Ktorrent like advanced options, plus new features, options, like hide to tray by default, auto updater with options of time limit of available peers, advanced update torrent finder from internet, looking for more trackers ... Many options, like in another idea underneath, migration function, users community and favorite torrent and download list. Let it be most by community used download manager for everything. Online and Live activities, logging, user interaction ...

Solution #3: One extension: Use Transmission for all transmissions
Written by androdebian the 8 May 09 at 18:24.
Transmission have a great interface only for download/upload bittorrents. The same interface can be used for direct downloads (from firefox, ftp, ssh...), move/copy local files, p2p downloads...

In resume, we can use Transmission to unify all tasks referents to move information, including burning CD/DVD...

Solution #4: Transmission Ktorrent indicator and implementator.
Written by cracken226 the 22 May 09 at 16:00.
Using Transmission as prefered torrent application is easy. But many users are installing Ktorrent for Gnome environment as well. We should be able to link Transmission to Ktorrent engine, use it's options for better downloading. In menu, there should be an link to transfer settings to Ktorrent and vice versa, so transfering files and settings to Ktorrent and continue downloading files in another software vice versa would be easy. By transfering torrent, files and settings, updating preferences, first migrated software should be automatically closed.

Solution #5: Transmission and Jigdo, OverNet and others.
Written by cracken226 the 25 May 09 at 10:51.
Number 2 is right. Light download manager should do more, than others and still be light, but powerfull. Somehow, we are forgetting other download technologies, like Jigdo, Overnet. Always but have to install them to use in the main system. We should implement them too. Linux was always good, because, what i could not find in Windows, that was defenitively in linux. Good point. Somehow we are forgeting older technologies. Implement all other download techniques into Transmission, and we will be number one. Promise. Why should use one milion programs to download just one file, when Transmission is already in the system?

This project idea is not linked to/and/or any other projects ideas created by me at this date. Please, vote. Check again later for new updated links. Thank You for making our Ubuntu better. Bohuslav Jonathan Tóth.

Downloading uses a lot of power at the moment.
Written by jack0rlando the 17 Jan 10 at 10:59. New
I want there to be a more energy efficient way of downloading. It should be like standby but keep downloads going and once all downloads are finished it should shut down. Or whatever else we may choose.

When you go to shutdown it should warn you if you have downloads running and then go into this mode for all transmission and Firefox downloads.

Solution #2: Execute a script when download is done
Written by everest40 the 20 Jan 10 at 19:07.
I agree, a feature like this would be useful. I think it could be partially implemented like this:

I know that some apps (Deluge and Skype, for example) are capable of executing a script when a download finishes. Perhaps make it possible for:
1) More apps, such as Firefox or Transmission, to execute custom scripts when a download finishes
2) Scripts to execute some simple command which tells Ubuntu that it is safe to shutdown, at which point Ubuntu would pop up a dialog stating that the system will shut down in X number of seconds and allow the user to cancel it.

I like this solution because it can be easily added to any program, the user can customize the script to do other things instead of or in addition to shutting down, and it gives the user a chance to cancel the shutdown if they want.

Solution #3: Advanced Power Settings (screen lock only)
Written by tntricker the 26 Jan 10 at 05:04.
Update the power management configuration settings to
suspend all non-critical services(after timeout),
lock processor throttle(if idle),
turn off display(already implemented)
suspend all other non vital hardware(usb.. etc)

allow applications to send a shutdown signal that is executed if the system hasn't received user input for a certain amount of time(probably a minute or so and only while idle).
