While ubuntu gets more user friendly for new users with every release, there are still a lot of times when users must open up a terminal to get a bit of work done. Istalling some packages if they use a loki installer for ex. Or doing some low level configuration to get that one piece of obscure hardware working. Why not make the shell experience more user friendly for people when they must use it. I'm talking better syntax highlighting so you know if you spelt a command or filename wrong. More complete tab completion for filenames and command line options. These are all features of Fish, the friendly interactive shell. I don't do shell scripting, but when I do need to use the CLI, fish makes thw experience much more painless.

Use more RAM memory (Yes really) !
Written by Agrou the 28 Feb 08 at 15:59. Global category: System. Implemented
Today most of the computers are providing 2GB of RAM or more. When I'm looking at the memory consumption of ubuntu it is about 400MB.

I think that Ubuntu should look at the RAM capacity of the computer and take the full advantage of the hudge amount of memory that we have today.

I'm sure it will be possible to preload most usefull apps and to bring a more efficient, smooth and fast system.

Make copy paste better!!
Written by dDino the 6 Mar 08 at 17:20. Global category: System. Implemented
Now when I want to edit an image I found on the internet (using firefox), I have to save the image to my HDD and open it in my editor/viewer.
It would be a lot less work if I just could copy paste the image like.

There is already a "copy image location" and "save image to .." option in the rightclick menu of Firefox, it shouldn't be too hard to add a "copy this image" option too!.

Updated ISOs to download
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 17:56. Global category: System. Implemented
Instead of suggesting a "Service Pack Like" idea, I'm suggesting to update the ISO files at Ubuntu website and mirrors, that way, we can download the ISO with the latest packages and the latest fixes already out of the box.

Bring Computer Clock NTP Internet synchronization back!
Written by keen101 the 22 Mar 08 at 05:44. Global category: System. Implemented
***Update - I believe this has been fixed/implemented***

In Gutsy we had the ability to synchronize our computer clock with that of an internet server, to keep accurate time.

With Hardy Heron, that feature has been lost. :(

This may not seem like a big deal, but it is, because daylight savings time came early for us. My Ubuntu clock is two hours behind, because the new timezone clock feature thinks it's a different time. If I could synchronize with an internet server, I could fix this problem.

Set Your Computer Clock Via the Internet
NIST Internet Time Service (ITS)

The NIST Internet Time Service (ITS) allows users to synchronize computer clocks via the Internet. The time information provided by the service is directly traceable to UTC(NIST). The service responds to time requests from any Internet client in several formats including the DAYTIME, TIME, and NTP protocols.

Color Coded Update Notifier   forum
Written by drewtown the 28 Feb 08 at 23:29. Global category: System. Implemented
I think it is important for the update notifier to be color coded to stress the importance of security updates. Red updates could signify that there is an important security updates while all other updates could stay the original orange color.

Developer comments
A red exclamation mark is shown instead of the standard orange icon if there are security updates.

Pidgin 2.4 in Hardy instead of 2.3
Written by bogdan_5844 the 12 Apr 08 at 18:55. Global category: System. Implemented
(Should be marked as implemented)

Currently,in the Hardy Heron Beta the Pidgin version is 2.3. A new version has been released,2.4.1,wich solves many problem, for example the file transfer send/recieve problem on the yahoo protocol.

I suggest upgrading pidgin to the latest version, because there are many improvements ;-)

updatedb picks the wrong time to index.
Written by zoubidoo the 29 Feb 08 at 20:39. Global category: System. Implemented
updatedb indexes files but often does so at an inconvenient time.

When I switch on my laptop in the morning, the first thing it does is index. Presumably it was scheduled for 4am but wasn't switched on then so it picked the first opportunity that arose.

Suggestion:
Check whether the keyboard/mouse is in use, if so postpone (a bit like a screensaver)

This is implemented in hardy via mlocate.

Give focus to filename input in gnome File->"Save as" dialog
Written by oleksiy the 4 Mar 08 at 11:53. Global category: System. Implemented
When you click "Save as" menu item in gnome application a dialog windows appears and you naturally start typing new name but that field doesn't have focus and you have to click it. It would be perfect to give focus to the name field automatically.

Add AM/PM time format for en_IE (Irish English) locale   forum
Written by rorymccann the 8 Mar 08 at 18:36. Global category: System. Implemented
There is no AM/PM format defined for the en_IE format. Launchpad bug #199899 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/199899 is about this and has a patch to make it work.
