Simple GUI is needed for LUKS/dm-crypt type partitions and encrypted containers
Written by sarpulhu the 3 Feb 09 at 19:49. Related project: Gnome. New
I've looked and looked but I can't seem to find any current and simple GUI that is for LUKS/dm-crypt type encryption on Linux. I know about Truecrypt but was looking for something that uses the encryption provided natively by Linux. I feel more comfortable using encryption that comes with Linux and find that I sometimes have compatibility issues getting Truecrypt running. What I was looking for is something using GTK for example and provides a similar interface to Truecrypt. It would provide a wizard to create a file that would be used to provide OTFE (on the fly encryption) and would mount/unmount the file and create a virtual drive to /media/gtkcrypt for example. Something that would allow me to create files that I could use as virtual encrypted drives. Then I could easily move the files around and back them up etc. It would also be handy if it had the ability to mount LUKS/dm-crypt partitions and convert exiting partitions to using dm-crypt if able. I'm not a programmer myself but from what I've read it seems like all the underlying software is there is just needs someone to write a simple GUI on top of it all. Any ideas? Thanks.

Solution #1: Create a simple GUI that uses the low level tools of LUKS/dm-crypt
Written by sarpulhu the 3 Feb 09 at 19:49.
A GUI would have to be made using a tool kit such as GTK with a project page for people to collaborate on it. Truecrypt would be a good place to start at looking how they handle encrypted file containers and mount/unmount.

Allow whole disk encryption from Ubuntu Desktop installer
Written by tdn the 7 Dec 09 at 16:13. Related project: Live CD installer. New
Currently the Ubuntu Desktop installer does not allow the user to set up whole disk encryption (with lvm/luks). However, this is easily done though the "Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM" option in the alternate installer. This should also be possible via the desktop installer.

Solution #1: Add the option: "Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM"
Written by tdn the 7 Dec 09 at 16:13.
Just add the option "Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM" to the GUI installer also. This should be fairly trivial, as the code is already there in the alternate installer.

Solution #2: add checkbox to partition list
Written by theonebshaw the 10 Dec 09 at 21:20.
I think it would be better to not clutter up the preset area and instead, when you select manual setup, add a check box similar to the current 'format partition' checkbox that allows you to encrypt certain applicable partitions... partitions that are irrelevant for encryption(like a current ntfs or a swap partition) would be darked out and not allow you to check them.

This would allow those who need/want encryption to easily install it and would avoid confusing other less tech-savvy users who just want to get Ubuntu installed on their computer.

Solution #3: Allow both automatic and manual options to install to encrypted LVM
Written by Orzech the 14 Jan 10 at 14:15.
User should have both, automatic and manual options to install Ubuntu to encrypted lvm volumes. Automatic is nice to fresh install whereas manual selection allows to choose from aleready existing partitions without need to format eg. full of user data /home partition.

Removable media may need to be encrypted, Ubuntu has no easy way.
Written by blueadept the 24 Dec 09 at 01:07. Global category: Security. New
Nautilus has a very nice GUI for managing the use of LUKS formatted removable media, such as flash drives and removable hard drives, but there is no GUI to format a device in this way.

Many users would benefit from being able to create encrypted flash/removable drives using LUKS format.

Solution #1: GParted should be able to create a filesytem in an encrypted LUKS container.
Written by blueadept the 24 Dec 09 at 01:07.
It would seem that an option to create whatever filesystem inside a LUKS container with a given passphrase, instead of simply creating the filesystem would be relatively simple from a GUI perspective.

encryption key
Written by giancarlogiesa the 27 Nov 08 at 22:31. Related project: Live CD installer. New
now is possible to use a password for encrypt a LVM ( thanks to LUKS i think )

why don' t give the possibility to use a file saved on a floppy or on external pendrive ?

...LUKS have this possibility...!

like a key for switch on the computer, a true key!

Allow LiveCD to access an install-time encrypted partition on HDD.
Written by Ubun2ideas the 4 Aug 08 at 17:06. Related project: Live CD. New
Has anyone out there used the Ubuntu Alternate Install CD to create an install-time encrypted system? If so, you'll understand just what I'm talking about:

If you have an install-time encrypted system and need to use a LiveCD to rescue some data off the hard drive, you're stuck. Currently there might be a way to get to your data, but if so I'm certainly not aware of it.

It should be a lot simpler. The Ubuntu LiveCD should autodetect if your hard drive contains a dm-crypt LUCKS filesystem, and prompt you (possibly at boot time) if you'd like to mount it (followed by prompting for your passphrase, of course.)
