Pidgin OpenPGP / GnuPG encryption
Written by nonge the 3 Jan 09 at 09:01. New
The default instant messenger Pidgin should have the option to use GnuPG (OpenPGP standard) to encrypt messages.

Pidgin supports OTR, but OpenPGP can be used for offline messages, too. And beside that: there are many clients out there, which only support OpenPGP encryption but not OTR.

We need more encryption. We tempt users to use Pidgin (because "it was there"). So we should provide all possible ways, to ease these encryption stuff up for everyone. It's difficult for most of the users, and additional compatibility problems are not helpful.

Pidgin Translate
Written by coder543 the 2 Jan 09 at 22:25. New
Essentially, this idea is http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/16978/ applied to Pidgin. I would like to see a plugin for, or even a modification to the base code of, pidgin that would use google translate to automagically translate the messages to and from the users native language.

Pidgin + Google Translate = Universal Communicator.

Make the status bar more beautiful and less bully.
Written by Wiplash4 the 29 Dec 08 at 19:52. New
I know this is not important, but please make the status bar of pidgin less bully. Make it possible that the bar resizes with pidgin. Or that the bar is as big as the menu list.
Reduce the number of statuses:
Available
Invisible
Occupied: Visible, but not available and messages are delivered, when user is invisible or available again.
Away: Invisible and Occupied.
Delete Idle and Offline!

If One would allow only those 4 statuses, a big bar would not be necessary anymore and could be replaced by a small bar. In the textfield below user could type his message (and save it seperated to the status).

Clean-up pidgin icons
Written by jlpino the 27 Dec 08 at 23:10. New
Pidgin (2.5.2) always save icons in ~/.purple/icons and never clean this folder.
Pidgin usually store all images that your contact use in this folder, and he never clean it, so I suggest a option in pidgin to delete this files when it isn't neccesaries.

Allow auto-resize picture when sending via Pidgin
Written by fcsonline the 15 Dec 08 at 08:35. New
How many times I have seen a newbie sending to a friend a picture from a camera. Usualy these pictures have a huge size, and the friend only wants a smaller picture.

My idea is to offer a auto-resize from the huge picture to a predefined sizes, (800x600, 1024x768, ...) and obviously the original size if it wants.

It's not possible now to send whole directory via Pidgin. The only way is to pack it into *.rar or *.zip etc...

"Add buddy" and czech encoding in Pidgin
Written by la_serpe the 12 Dec 08 at 14:57. New
In dialog window "add byddy" there are only 3 arrays: buddy name, alias and group. I think that there should be also array for UIN number of a buddy.
I also found one bug in Pidgin: Czech encoding doesn't work! It displays something like žx9e;x9e;e instead of Czech characters.

Pidgin: Enable encryption (OTR) by default
Written by florian the 10 Dec 08 at 21:00. New
Off The Record (OTR) is a really user-friendly way to encrypt instant messaging.

OTR shipped as an optional plugin for Pidgin, but many users do not know what it is or how to enable it.
Since its advantage is clear and it works without much user interaction (especially it does not harm people on the other side not using OTR), it would be worth enabling it by default.

Okay, maybe the appearance on screen could be a little improved, but the rest is just fine... ;-)

pidgin: make online/offline-arrows green and red again
Written by florian the 9 Dec 08 at 22:26. New
The small arrow-icon in front of a buddy who is just going on- or offline is really a helpful feature.

But since some of the last updates, this arrow is black in both cases. Before it was green for online an red for offline.
That was intuitive.
Please change it back. :-)
