Easy screen-sharing and audio-chat for instant messengers
Written by jaenz the 7 Jan 09 at 15:49. Already implemented
Yesterday a friend of mine asked for help in Photoshop. And instead of configuring my router, care for my IP or dyndns-stuff, he just called me via Jabber on iChat in OS X. That was - awesome -! One of the big, big time-saving things, Apple serves.

To cut a long story short: we definitely need an audio-chat possibility (at least for XMPP) in Pidgin or Empathy (speaking of gnome). Bundled with screen-sharing it's just perfect to solve problems over the internet.

Solution #1: Use vino
Written by jaenz the 7 Jan 09 at 15:49.
You might say "this exists and is called ekiga". You're right, but it's complicated to run two programs, register a SIP-account AND (!) convert all your friends to ekiga. Ekiga is simply too unkown, to use it outside of the open-source world.

I actually don't know how much time the implementation would take. But I believe, vino offers an option to grab the screen and gstreamer doubtlessly provides streaming of audio and video.

Finally such a "bling-bling"-functionality is a great way to win new Ubuntu-users.

Solution #2: Use empathy by default in Ubuntu
Written by torkiano the 14 Jan 09 at 06:15.
Empathy can do audio AND video calls to other XMPP/GTalk users.

It has support for SIP too, and for the most important IM protocols: msn, AIM ...

Also, VNC over XMPP tunnels has been done with empathy.

I think use empathy by default is the first step to implement this idea

Solution #3: Use Skype
Written by znupi the 14 Jan 09 at 18:13.
Why not use Skype? It's cross-platform, provides audio and video chatting and a lot of people use it (including me, my brother and quite a few other people I know). Although Skype isn't open source, that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. It is still free, and it is well known for its high quality sound and video transmission even on poor bandwidths.

Personally, I really think Skype is the best option for audio and video chatting.

Solution #4: Add audio/video and screen sharing support to Pidgin
Written by amrhassan the 14 Jan 09 at 19:40.
Since most of us are already using it. I don't wanna have pidgin running for text, empathy for voice and another app for screen sharing.

Solution #6: Gitso
Written by Baggers the 19 Jan 09 at 11:57.
Single click reverse ssh tunnel using VNC.
Works on Mac, Linux, and Windows
The non geek being assisted doesn't need to worry about opening ports or what their IP is, that is down to person giving the assistance.
Open Source, small and simple.
Obviously it would be great if it could be initiated by the popular IM clients though.

Solution #9: use gitso + mid-way server
Written by fdetienn the 12 May 09 at 10:24.
I work in tech support for a major. We use webex and webex is a bandwidth hog => not always good.

The problem with VNC (and hence Vino) is the initiation from support engineer -> customer as the customer would have to allow incoming connections. Most of the time, you do not have time to punch the holes or the customer's infosec department will not allow you or the customer will be too lazy/ignorant and will hide behind his infosec department. Pick one.

The problem with reverse VNC (Gitso) alone is the same on the support engineer side. Most IT departments in large enterprises like to justify their presence by blocking traffic, preventing engineers to work, make engineer yell so IT can look protective :-D. In a word: incoming reverse vnc sessions won't work.

What we all really need is this:

[engineer]---[ent fw>]--mws--[

annoying buddy sign on notifications
Written by zorkerz the 8 Mar 09 at 06:34. Already implemented
The pidgin implementation of notify-osd in jaunty sends notification bubbles for every buddy sign on. For people with large buddy lists this can lead to a huge volume of notifications. I think many people would prefer not to be notified for every person who signs on. Pidgin allows you to set pounces for the people you really need to know when they get on.

Solution #1: disable buddy sign on notification bubbles
Written by zorkerz the 8 Mar 09 at 06:34.
There should be an option to allow or disallow notification bubbles for buddy sign on. I would prefer this be disabled by default but that depends more on what the general consensus is.

This appears to already be implemented. In pidgin go to 'configure plugin' of tools -> plugins -> 'libnotify popups' This allows you to decide what you get notifications for.

General simple picture library
Written by Loofy the 4 May 10 at 08:49. Already implemented
I think it should be possible to do some simple image manipulation during the usecase of choosing an avatar -
For instance when choosing one as the Avatar for Empathy, Pidgin or any other place where you can choose to have an Avatar lookalike thing.

I think for instance you can do something like this in Adium on MacOS.

When talking about manipulation here - it isn't to be any rocketsience at all! just some cropping and/or Sizeadjusting tool.

Solution #1: General lib/Package that can be used by instances wanting it
Written by Loofy the 4 May 10 at 08:49.
Projects that want this feature can integrate to one single lib that has all the functionality built into it. To have one lib like this will also make the user to recognize the tool when encountered more than once.

Solution #2: Connect to Gravatar
Written by Loofy the 4 May 10 at 08:51.
Since Gravatar already have this functionality I am after this might be a solution. There is however a con to this if user hasn't got an internet connection it might not work to well.

Difficulties to manage and follow all different social networks
Written by WindCatcher the 14 Apr 10 at 09:32. Already implemented
With Facebook, Twitter, Orkut and the other social networks is become harder and harder to follow the people which really care and easily manage and handle the huge quantity of informations (status updates, new photos, media, etc.) that come from this socials (N.B.: Infact lots of informations produce noninformation or better an hard difficult to find exactly what we are looking for).

Solution #1: Htc FriendStream-like application to manage all socials in a single place
Written by WindCatcher the 14 Apr 10 at 09:32.
An application where we can log in to all social networks we are subscripted, a single place where we can see and handle all status updates, new photo and media updates from our friends, and manage our different accounts from a single place (for basic operations e.g.: change of status).
Another idea would be the possibility to set masks to filter notifications, in a way to follow only the people which really care.
This application would be an improvement/integration with MessaginMenu.

Here it's the example of the application FriendStream from Htc: http://www.htc.com/europe/howtoimage.aspx?id=214

Pidgin Input History...
Written by tenplus1 the 20 Jan 09 at 19:24. Already implemented
Most chat clients have an input history where you can use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to scroll through previously entered lines...

Pidgin for some reason does not have this facility, but it would be a very handy thing to have, especially for the IRC client where mis-typed commands currently have to be re-typed instead of pressing the up arrow and corrected...

The user could also set how many lines Pidgin remembers in the history for each window opened...

Solution #1: Incorporate History in Program Itself
Written by tenplus1 the 20 Jan 09 at 19:24.
Developers could write a simple history into the client itself that allows you to set how many lines Pidgin remembers, then the UP and DOWN arrow keys can be used to scroll through the history in the input box...

Written by Stalker72 the 8 Nov 08 at 14:02. Already implemented
In Windows Live Messenger, you can enable an option to show your buddies your song info. I want this in Pidgin Internet Messenger too! In other words, gather song info from Rhythmbox, Amarok, Banshee and Songbird!
