Ubuntu is too blotted and people argue about the preinstalled sofware.

People often do not know the windows software alternatives for the Linux platform, one way of making them aware of this is by packing that software with the Ubuntu releases so they always know by browsing through the menu; the downside is that Ubuntu get blotted heavily cause of this and a few things are too deeply integrated in Ubuntu, such that it will remove the whole ubuntu-dekstop.

Another problem is people at times do not like the default software installed in Ubuntu and they debate a lot over it.

Solution #1: 'Blank' sofware shorcuts in the gnome menus to make people aware of them.
Written by dE the 13 May 10 at 15:53.
The menus in Ubuntu should just list all these software which are mostly alternatives to windows in the menu, clicking them, will openup a dialog saying "This software is not installed; should it be installed now?".

This dialog might also include the name of the software that it will replace (windows one).

This will also resolve conflicts and debates for the default software installed, for e.g. people like xscreensaver more than gnome-screensaver, so we should have a shortcut named 'install xscreensaver', which should open a popup box "Remove gnome-screensaver and install xscreensaver?".

Through this we can also have a "Blank Ubuntu live-cd" (besides the mainstream) where only the minimal applications will be installed and the menus will mostly contain such shortcuts; thus reducing the size of Ubuntu, making it faster lighter and more customizable.

We should have another such shortcut to remove all these shortcuts from the default install. A separate package to install these shortcuts will also be a good idea.

Solution #2: ask the user what they want on install or first login
Written by DonnyDonNothin the 22 Nov 10 at 15:02.
on install or on first login:
1. have a window/page with a list of popular apps that they can choose to install && || inform the user how to get more.
2. possibly even let them choose what desktop they would like instead of having separate kubuntu and xubuntu releases( surely this has to have been mentioned before).

i switched to archlinux because it comes with nothing and i get to the freedom to choose the software i want to use. Remember the oem trialware crap that came with your last computer with MS windows pre-installed???
