Include some openoffice extensions
Written by benjamimgois the 13 Apr 09 at 04:12. New
OpenOffice is a great application, but there's a lack of important and usefull tools in the default installation. Include some extensions by default, could improve the use of the office suite for new users.

Solution #1: Include some templates for Impress
Written by benjamimgois the 13 Apr 09 at 04:12.
A small database of templates is a very important and usefull feature to create presentations.

I propose "Modern templates for impress"

Solution #2: Link to 'More Templates' on the server
Written by cheesehead the 13 Apr 09 at 13:16.
Let OpenOffice show thumbnails of the templates from an online source, and download each automatically on demand.
Add to the 'Create A New Presentation' druid
Add to the Task pane
Add to the Templates organizer

This system keeps the LiveCD small (the Modern templates are over 8MB uncompressed, and the LiveCD is already a tight squeeze), keeps the installed templates limited to what's actually used, and still provides users with the largest number of choices and options seamlessly.

Users can still download the entire template pack for offline use, or by choice of course.

Open office Impress doesn't embeed audio/video
Written by qwerty800 the 27 Jan 10 at 02:41. New
OpenOffice can't embed audio/video since it would make the ".odp" too heavy.

Solution #1: Have a "Final presentation" function
Written by qwerty800 the 27 Jan 10 at 02:41.
A "final presentation" option could be handy!
While the normal ODP allow links, the final presentation wouldn't, embedding everything instead, making it easy to put it on a USB drive, or send it by e-mail.

Solution #2: Side-idea: Make the Theora format recognisible from the Vorbis format
Written by qwerty800 the 27 Jan 10 at 02:43.
Currently, even if a Theora file labeled OGV is loaded in OOo, it is interpreted as an audio file, and most of the time won't work.

Apple's PowerPoint Application (Keynote) Slide Transitions & Animation
Written by teeteebahbah the 21 Jul 08 at 04:06. New
Apple's PowerPoint Presentation application, Keynote, is amazing & even better than PowerPoint, in some ways, notably, the slide transition effects & animations.

Most people do NOT know that PowerPoint supposedly was originally created for Macs, not PCs. The original company got bought out by guess who? Microsoft, of course.

Apple has since then created their own "PowerPoint" application called Keynote. Its a part of the iWork 08 application suite. I

Just watch any keynote presentation (on Apple.com or YouTube) given by Steve Jobs, i.e. the recent 3G iphone keynote announcement & introduction.

All linux users, not just Ubuntu users, need to have a PowerPoint or Keynote-like application that is equally professional & awesome in slide transitions & animations equal to the Desktop Effects found in Compiz-Fusion. Maybe it should be some how incorporated in w/the Compiz-Fusion Technology.

OpenOffice.Org 3.0's application, Impress or Presentation, will definitely be an improvement over the current version. However, it looks like it will not have the ability to perform the same very slick & amazing slide transitions & animations especially those available in Apple's Keynote. There is still room for improvement.

Pop ups during presentation can show sensitive information
Written by dinda the 3 Aug 10 at 14:53. New
When making a public presentation with OpenOffice.org Impress or even a PDF or Writer document, often times a system or email or calendar notification pops up to helpfully remind me of something. These can reveal more information than a user would often like (i.e. Doctor's appt, email subject lines, etc.) or just be annoying (update manger).

There should be a way to easily shift the computer to Presentation mode so that even programs in the background don't offer notifications. Not sure if this makes more sense at the system level or application level; i.e when a user starts a presentation in Impress, the app notifies the system to stop these. Or if it needs to be at the system level for all notifications to be suppressed but only in presentation mode?

Solution #1: Presentation Mode for the System level
Written by dinda the 3 Aug 10 at 14:53.
Create a Presentation mode in Notifications that is linked with certain applications such as Impress so that when I go into Presentation mode, all notifications are suppressed. Then when I'm exit that mode, a reminder asks if I want to return to normal notifications mode.

Solution #2: Presentation Mode for the System level based on user choice
Written by alci the 18 Oct 11 at 14:18.
Basically the same solution as n°1, except it is not tied to certain applications, but to the user making the choice to suspend notifications. I want to suspend notifications even when showing code in eclipse, not only when using apps dedicated to presentations. Add the choice for example in "message indicator" statuses.

At least guess the closest font to the proprietary one.
Written by deadowl the 10 Nov 08 at 00:02. New
In OpenOffice.org, I slides from my professors, and it's just terrible the outcome. Most of it is due to poor font replacement. It would be nice if there was a service that chose a font when the defined one isn't there.

Open office presentation editor uses too much memory
Written by noname444 the 16 Dec 08 at 01:40. New
OO text editor is just wonderful (program is using CPU and memory about 48%), but when I have to make presentations, my CPU and memory are loaded up to 98%! For me it is very big problem. Because when I need to write my report, I have to wait till program (load up) all changes in text.

Sometimes we get stuck with the wrong slides during a presentation!
Written by nunodonato the 5 Mar 09 at 11:56. New
"This is an idea of a new extension, add-in or built-in feature to be added to software applications like OpenOffice.org Impress, Microsoft Powerpoint or Apple Keynote.

The purpose is to allow the presenter to change the course of the presentation during the presentation itself, in such a way that it does not interrupt the presentation and it is done without the audience knowledge. This of course, requires the use of "presenter tools"/"presenter view mode"."

Innovative presentation tool, like Prezi, will encourage people to switch
Written by andresmh the 13 Oct 09 at 05:48. New
I think a good number of people have switched to Mac because they see others doing creative presentations on Keynote. I think if there was something like Prezi that works natively in Ubuntu, people would be curious to try it and switch. And in general, it would be great to have FLOSS version of Prezi.

A Prezi clone. Free, open source, local.

Solution #2: Be innovative on our own
Written by Mirek2 the 17 Nov 09 at 19:56.
Sure, Prezi's innovative and we can learn from it, but, geez, can't we ever come up with something ourselves?
I would like the community to come up with something:
- Efficient and unbloated
- Without the awful workflow and bad results of PowerPoint (read http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.09/ppt2.html)
- Unique, not yet another clone
In any case, I think these points apply to any software: personally, I think a really good word processor or a good image editor (I would love something that combines vector and bitmap tools as well as Fireworks: it's the one thing I still use a proprietary OS for) would get more people to switch than a presentation app.

Solution #3: Turn The Board Brainstorms to impressive presentations
Written by aw@kreawit.se the 13 Dec 10 at 10:02.
Presentation are not just the process presenting, it is also the process of authoring and package of a message. I think the brainstorm utility in progress "The Board" have the potential to be an avesome tool that also can be turned to present the ideas that have been brainstormed.

Compiz effects in OpenOffice Impress
Written by crdrews the 23 Sep 10 at 20:55. New
It is important for students and professionals to be able to display an idea or concept with the best presentation possible.

Compiz desktop effects should be integrated to OpenOffice Impress so that people would be able to make the most astonishing presentations imaginable.

Solution #1: Integrate Compiz Plugins with OpenOffice Impress
Written by crdrews the 23 Sep 10 at 20:55.
Compiz already have a very respectable set of plugins that could be integrated to OpenOffice Impress in order to make better transitions and slide effects available to the user.

It is understandable that it would affect the portability of the presentations generated with such effects, but since they are optional and many people use its own notebook or netbook to display its own presentations, this must be no more than a minor issue.

Right now I divide my presentations in a series of files, organize them prior the metting in multiple desktops, and use window and desktop transition effects to achieve this goal, but it is much harder to do things this way.

Linking to a document embedded
Written by Aesculus the 4 Apr 09 at 10:48. New
When you have a document (a presentation for instance) and you have to show information from another you have several possibilities:

- Copy and paste the information to the proper place in your document
- Embedded the destination document
- Link the destination document

The 3rd means that you have to manage carefully two documents to ensure the links always work, for instance if you send by email, move to a network place...

If there are different pieces of info in the destination document you need then only the first option is valid. Well, the other two also, but with big size if you attach several times the document or more complexity working wirh links to a different part of the destination document.

Solution #1: Link to a document embedded
Written by Aesculus the 4 Apr 09 at 10:48.
The describe problem could be solved if you were able to link into a destination document previously embedded in your document.

This is specially interesting working with catalogs. If you have to elaborate one presentation about products you can embedded in your presentation the catalog and link to the proper parts as many times as you need for your specific presentation.

Even more, the catalog can be hide putting it after the end of the presentation.
