Reduce size of thumbnails and file names in nautilus
Written by daas88 the 24 Dec 08 at 02:12. Not an idea
I hate when a file has a looooooong name and nautilus displays it all... it wastes a lot of space in the window, the same for a wide or long image, the thumbnail can be annoyingly big.

This is a good example:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-3LuyW0Vy7Sapf6U5RZn-w?authkey=oXsqA8rO8Vc &feat=directlink

I wish nautilus had smaller thumbnails like thunar, and i wish they did something about long file names.

This is a screenshot of the same folder but in the thunar file manager:

Add ability to sort objects in reverse order by default
Written by blinry the 22 Mar 09 at 09:48. Not an idea
I like to have my folders sorted by modification date. Nautilus lets you set this in the settings, but there is no possibility to reverse this order by default.

Add a checkbox "reverse order" in the first tab of the settings dialog.

Make Nautilus More Feature Rich
Written by prince_niceguy the 20 Nov 08 at 21:20. Not an idea
I have used dolphin of KDE and explorer in windows and some how nautilus lacks lot of features in dolphin and explorer. I am listing them, they make life easier.

1. split view - split view allows you to view two folders side by side. this is very useful in copying files from one folder to another.
2. Provide navigation like dolphin -say you have traversed to a > b > c > d. If you have to go to a folder c1 under b folder then you will have to click on b and then again click on c1. In dolphin you can click and hold b in the bar and it will show the folders under b. Now clicking on c1 would take you the folder c1. Much easier to use.

If you use dolphin you will understand what I am referring to, I could create a diagram and put it but it is not possible to upload a presentation or jpeg here.

Increase Nautilus' "text beside icons" text line width
Written by wleoncio the 6 Dec 08 at 02:56. Not an idea
When configuring Nautilus to display texts for files and folders beside the respective icons, files and folders with big names tend to look really ugly, as you can see on the attached mockup below.

I think Nautilus would look a lot nicer if there was more horizontal space for the text, like shown on mockup of Solution 1.

Solution #1: Option to set text line width on Nautilus' preferences
Written by wleoncio the 6 Dec 08 at 02:56.
Mockup of problem and solution: http://i38.tinypic.com/2h4l193.png (sorry for the bad quality, I don't know what happened. It looked perfect on GIMP).

It would be even better if nautilus allowed the user to set the text width he desires, like on this mockup: http://i34.tinypic.com/4g2h4p.png

The Common Tasks Would Change Per folder , for example if there were mostly pictures in the folder , the folder type would be picture , also the background would change accordingly in colour.

Solution #2: Common Task pane in Nautilus for Default folders.
Written by lifesf the 5 Nov 09 at 07:58.
Almost the same as idea #1:

Adding a "themed" folder to default user 'video','music','documents','pictures','downloads'... home folders

Pre-determined folders could have their little "icon" appear behind the files &/or pane.

- no colour change
- not all folders based on common tasks

-Home folders- (Where the typical home user should save his documents and wants to find them; no more)

Smart Overwrite
Written by Cybercod the 3 Dec 08 at 05:20. New
When beginning a copy or move action, and an overwrite is about to occur, the computer does a hash of both files, and if they are the same file, it just assumes the overwrite action as being done and doesn't bother you with a question of whether or not you want to.

I'm thinking this would be helpful on network folders, so long as the hashing was done by the server and by the client and then compared. Hashing would probably take a longer time than copying if done by the client on a server's file.

If I'm making a wrong assumption as to the speed of file hashing, I apologize.

I fully expect this idea to get shot down, but I'm curious as to why its a bad idea.

In Nautilus, Improving Find-as-you-type feature
Written by h.vinay the 8 Jul 09 at 17:38. New
In Nautilus, when you type the file name it navigates to file name searched.
When a user starts typing, he often uses this option with out trying to search the file himself(he searches file concentrating on keyboard not on monitor). If a match is not found there is no intimation to user that it is not found.

Solution #1: Improving Find-as-you-type feature with a warning tone

In this case it will be better to add a warning tone when it cannot find a match.

Solution #3: Do not allow the user to enter characters that make no match
Written by karatedog the 18 Mar 10 at 15:17.
Should the user enter a character with which the search string would not yield a result, Nautilus should delete that character back (or not let the user to enter it, at all).
1. This will give a user a clear feedback, that there is no match for the search string,
2. the search area won't be garbled with useless characters (usually users will enter at least 1 character that won't match). Currently you can enter any amount of characters, which is useless.
3. if a search string doesn't yield a result, Nautilus currently selects "nothing". With this improvement, the last selected line would remain selected, which would help the user in the previous (no. 2.) case. If he/she enters a few characters until Nautilus won't allow to enter any more characters, he/she can press Enter to interact with the selection (ie.: enter a directory)

Close Nautilus tabs with middle mouse click
Written by sproaty the 19 Dec 08 at 07:12. Not an idea
You can already open a folder in Nautilus by middle-clicking the folder, and can close the tab using CTRL+W/right click the tab, choose close.

It seems fairly reasonable to me to introduce a Firefox-style "close tab with middle mouse button", especially as the code for handling opening new tabs with that mouse button and the code for closing tabs are already in place.

cover-flow view mode in nautilus file manager
Written by slsolaris the 14 Dec 08 at 03:53. Not an idea
"cover-flow view" mode in nautilus File manager, like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPgxoGMaaR0 at 0:23
http://mac.elated.com/wp-content/uploads/leopard-finder-coverflow.jpg
http://homepage.mac.com/rmansfield/assets/misc/coverflow.jpg
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/finder.html

functionality:
1. This would be very useful when we see picture, with a simple double click we could set them to full screen.
2. Quick-View of a movie as you can see in the video.
3. you can click through multi-page documents as you can see in the video.
