I hate when a file has a looooooong name and nautilus displays it all... it wastes a lot of space in the window, the same for a wide or long image, the thumbnail can be annoyingly big.

I like to have my folders sorted by modification date. Nautilus lets you set this in the settings, but there is no possibility to reverse this order by default.

I have used dolphin of KDE and explorer in windows and some how nautilus lacks lot of features in dolphin and explorer. I am listing them, they make life easier.
1. split view - split view allows you to view two folders side by side. this is very useful in copying files from one folder to another.
2. Provide navigation like dolphin -say you have traversed to a > b > c > d. If you have to go to a folder c1 under b folder then you will have to click on b and then again click on c1. In dolphin you can click and hold b in the bar and it will show the folders under b. Now clicking on c1 would take you the folder c1. Much easier to use.
If you use dolphin you will understand what I am referring to, I could create a diagram and put it but it is not possible to upload a presentation or jpeg here.

When configuring Nautilus to display texts for files and folders beside the respective icons, files and folders with big names tend to look really ugly, as you can see on the attached mockup below.
I think Nautilus would look a lot nicer if there was more horizontal space for the text, like shown on mockup of Solution 1.
When beginning a copy or move action, and an overwrite is about to occur, the computer does a hash of both files, and if they are the same file, it just assumes the overwrite action as being done and doesn't bother you with a question of whether or not you want to.
I'm thinking this would be helpful on network folders, so long as the hashing was done by the server and by the client and then compared. Hashing would probably take a longer time than copying if done by the client on a server's file.
If I'm making a wrong assumption as to the speed of file hashing, I apologize.
I fully expect this idea to get shot down, but I'm curious as to why its a bad idea.
In Nautilus, when you type the file name it navigates to file name searched.
When a user starts typing, he often uses this option with out trying to search the file himself(he searches file concentrating on keyboard not on monitor). If a match is not found there is no intimation to user that it is not found.

You can already open a folder in Nautilus by middle-clicking the folder, and can close the tab using CTRL+W/right click the tab, choose close.
It seems fairly reasonable to me to introduce a Firefox-style "close tab with middle mouse button", especially as the code for handling opening new tabs with that mouse button and the code for closing tabs are already in place.
functionality:
1. This would be very useful when we see picture, with a simple double click we could set them to full screen.
2. Quick-View of a movie as you can see in the video.
3. you can click through multi-page documents as you can see in the video.
