In handling files I frequently face following problems (it might not be obvious yet but all of them can be solved with filter):
1. If folder contain different types of files (documents, pictures, videos ...), there is no simple way to filter them to show “documents only” or “pictures only”. This feature would be real time saver.
2. If I just want information on what types of files the folder is containing I have to sort by type and scroll down. I would really like to have this information instantly – the moment I open folder.
3. If I select twenty files and want to quickly check one of them I will loose selection and will have to select files again.
4. If I manually search for picture in folder that contain pictures and documents I will change view to Icons, on the other hand if I search for document in the same folder I will change view to List. This requires frequent change of view.
Currently if you wish to open a file in a program that doesn't display on the "Select an application to open" dialog (right-click a file > Open with > Other Application), you simply can't open that file in your program of choice from nautilus without editing the defaults.list.
I always loved the way in which windows allowed me to rename a lot of files at once. For example, if I select a number of images and, in the right click menu, select rename and type the name like 'family', the images will be renamed as 'family1', 'family2' and so on. But, I miss this feature in ubuntu.
Nautilus should have a progress bar for those files you're downloading so it let you know if the folder where you are has some files being downloaded and they might be corrupted.
Of course, this can be extended to the files being transferred (copy/move).
For example: You are downloading some file with transmission. Let's say "movie.mkv" on the folder "Downloads". If you go to that folder Nautilus should tell you that the file might be corrupted. So if you open it, totem will fail.

Not an idea
I have folders which I gave an icon so that I can easily distinguish them from the rest. I also need to distinguish their windows from others, since sometimes I get up to 5 nautilus windows open at the same time, I am forced to read the title instead of getting to the folder I want. This destroys the purpose of giving a folder a distinct icon.

In Nautilus, when browsing in Icon View, it is currently impossible to distinguish between document types that provide previews without looking at their file extensions.
For example, if I have 2 similar documents side by side, one is a PDF, the other is an OpenOffice Writer document, they both look identical and I cannot tell which is the PDF without looking at the file extension.
Solution: Add a visual cue to the preview icon (either a mini file-type icon (like Windows), or simply a watermark with the file extension (like Mac OS X).

The feature sounds nice when you read about it. In reality, it gets really annoying after a while. I realize you can disable it if you don't want it, but if little features like this will be added over time, Ubuntu will become too bloated.

Hi,
Could somebody out there please alter Nautilus so that when you double click on the column width designator (ie the line between two columns) that it expands to the width of the largest file name underneath. Explorer does this in windows and Finder does it in OSX but Nautilus does not do it yet.

Hallo
I'm used to clean my usb keys with Disks.
Doing so last week I've noted a red written telling me that my disk will fail in the next 24 hours.
Fortunately my few important things are backupped, so I decide to reboot the pc to see if the fail was a temporarily things, but no more history... the disk is definitively lost (reallocation failure).
