Nautilus should support file filtering
Written by Damir Muratagic the 16 Apr 13 at 23:38. New
In handling files I frequently face following problems (it might not be obvious yet but all of them can be solved with filter):

1. If folder contain different types of files (documents, pictures, videos ...), there is no simple way to filter them to show “documents only” or “pictures only”. This feature would be real time saver.

2. If I just want information on what types of files the folder is containing I have to sort by type and scroll down. I would really like to have this information instantly – the moment I open folder.

3. If I select twenty files and want to quickly check one of them I will loose selection and will have to select files again.

4. If I manually search for picture in folder that contain pictures and documents I will change view to Icons, on the other hand if I search for document in the same folder I will change view to List. This requires frequent change of view.

Solution #1: Create Filter bar (much more then just a filter)
Written by Damir Muratagic the 16 Apr 13 at 23:38.
All of the problems mentioned above can be solved with filter bar as shown below.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/teh1i195ywdq7rt/1%20-%20all%20files.png

Filter bar would simply read content of folder and create categories depending on that content. Only categories for file types that are present in that folder will be shown in filter bar (e.g. if folder contain documents and pictures, filter bar will show: | all files | documents | pictures |)

By default „all files“ are shown. If you want to show only documents for example just click „documents“ item in filter bar as shown below.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rmi7bjvlpgcgg68/2%20-%20documents.png

If you want to show files from two or more categories simply click first category and then click check box on other categories you want (as shown below).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0kbal47l1g2rgrb/3%20-%20videos%20and%20documents.png

If you don't want to show all files within category there should be possibility to select types you want from that categories drop down menu.

Another useful feature would be possibility to work with selected files as if they were only files in folder. Each time you select two or more files item “selected” will appear in filter bar (as shown below).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/e0xjf8j8heerw8c/4%20-%20selection.png

After you selected files you want just click item "selected" and only selected files will be shown (as shown below).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ukrs74j4d19mxg3/5%20-%20selected.png

This option allows you to work with and open selected files without loosing selection. It could also let you to narrow your selection by letting you select within selection.

Each category can have it's default view (thumbnails for images and videos, list for documents etc.

For user who don't need filtering by categories like Documents/Images/Videos..., filter bar could perform other functions, such as: filtering by date modified, filtering by size etc. For folders with only one type of files filter bar could automatically switch to another filtering method.

In short, advantages of filter bar are:

1. Gives you instant information on categories of files the folder is containing (no need to sort and scroll down). If folder contains music you will instantly know it – just take quick look at the filter bar.

2. You can filter files with a single click and quickly switch between different categories.

3. Allows you to work with selected files as if they were only files in folder.

4. Reduces need to switch file view (thumbnails, details etc.) – each file category can have its default view (e.g. thumbnails for images and videos, icons for documents etc.).

5. Reduces/eliminates use of scroll bars – reduced number of files in a pane reduces need for scrolling.

Command in "Select an application to open" dialog
Written by pyrokinetiq the 9 May 13 at 06:36. New
Currently if you wish to open a file in a program that doesn't display on the "Select an application to open" dialog (right-click a file > Open with > Other Application), you simply can't open that file in your program of choice from nautilus without editing the defaults.list.

Solution #1: Allow custom commands
Written by pyrokinetiq the 9 May 13 at 06:36.
Add a text field to the dialog that allows users to specify a command to use to run the selected file, as well as a "Make default" check box that when checked will change the line for the mime type of the selected file to use the entered command instead of the current default program.

More info about media in Nautilus' statusbar
Written by forteller the 4 Sep 08 at 13:41. Not an idea
When I select a music file, video file or picture in Nautilus I would like to get some basic information about them in the status bar:

- For video and music: Length and quality.
- For pictures: Size (in pixels)

I think it's annoying that I have to open a movie just to find out how long it is.

Ability to rename a lot of files at once
Written by Jay Nnib the 26 Mar 13 at 09:18. New
I always loved the way in which windows allowed me to rename a lot of files at once. For example, if I select a number of images and, in the right click menu, select rename and type the name like 'family', the images will be renamed as 'family1', 'family2' and so on. But, I miss this feature in ubuntu.

Solution #1: Allow rename a number of files at once
Written by Jay Nnib the 26 Mar 13 at 09:18.
If a user selects a number of files and select rename from the right click menu or press F2 and give a name to it(for example, 'image'), rename all the files in a numerical order(like 'image(1)', 'image(2)' and so on.

Solution #2: Batch Rename Prompt
Written by chrisxsterling the 4 Apr 13 at 06:26.
Building off of Solution #1 and jGleitz's comment:
When you go to batch rename multiple files a prompt pops up so you can cancel (ESC) or set options like the number of leading zeros.

Nautilus should have a progress bar for those files you're downloading
Written by ironfisher the 23 Mar 10 at 15:52. New
Nautilus should have a progress bar for those files you're downloading so it let you know if the folder where you are has some files being downloaded and they might be corrupted.

Of course, this can be extended to the files being transferred (copy/move).

For example: You are downloading some file with transmission. Let's say "movie.mkv" on the folder "Downloads". If you go to that folder Nautilus should tell you that the file might be corrupted. So if you open it, totem will fail.

Solution #1: Nautilus plugin that show the progressbar and sync whith the download manager
Written by ironfisher the 23 Mar 10 at 15:52.
Nautilus can have some plugins to get the progress status and show a progressbar on the file (below or wherever)

For example: A plugin may get from Transmission the percent number of the progress for the file. This progress is shown as a progressbar below the file

Solution #2: That plugin may be in the downloader program
Written by ironfisher the 23 Mar 10 at 15:55.
Transmission, for example, tells Nautilus to show a progress bar as the file is not completed.

Solution #3: Additional ".download" file
Written by michele74 the 23 Mar 10 at 19:23.
A simple way to do this, is that other programs like web browsers and download manager write an additional file, for example, with extension ".download" and a dot prefix.
This file should be like a conf/ini file, with lines like "progress=59%".
When download finished, the file is deleted.

Solution #4: Just notify that the file is being downloaded
Written by la_serpe the 23 Mar 10 at 20:00.
Use a different icon for "files in progress" so it would be clear that the file is currently being downloaded. Let the browses download plugin to do the rest.

Solution #5: Use D-Bus/create a daemon for all file transfers
Written by matyy the 25 Mar 10 at 10:50.
Well I am not really clear about the technical side of it all, so someone else has to "refine" it. My idea is that it should be a consistent solution for all kind of file transfers - accessible for a lot of download programs and file browsers. A solution just for transmission and nautilus wouldn't be much more than a dirty hack.

When you have a daemon that controls all file transfers it can manage the download status and send notifications when downloads are done. This could also solve idea 24057 ( http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/24057/ ).

The best would be if you could configure everything at one place than - tell it where progress bars are shown, when it should send notifications and so on.

Solution #6: Make it themeable
Written by forteller the 28 Mar 10 at 17:14.
This is a fantastic idea, but some people might not like the way it looks in this mockup. Some would like to have a progress bar underneath the file, some would like a bar on top of the icon, some might rather want the percentage shown on top of the icon, or in a small badge in the top right corner of the icon, etc.. It should be easy for theme creators to change the look and feel of this.

Solution #7: File/dir metadata: target size
Written by sllih the 30 Mar 10 at 19:48.
Add target size as additional metadata of files or directories. Then show and update progress bar by the difference between target and actual size.
For example, the target size is 10MB and the actual size is 5MB, so the progress is 50%. This could work even if downloading is paused, postponed or abandoned.

Solution #8: xattr
Written by a.shaferov the 22 Apr 10 at 13:52.
Extended attributes:
- downloaded_from
- downloaded_percent
- downloaded_by - application which downloads this file of dir. To use in context menu.

Update attributes from download manager (or torrent client).
Simple plugin to display info from xattrs.

Solution #9: Also add a progress bar for files that are moved to another location
Written by elypter the 27 May 10 at 19:19.
to be able to distinguish it the download progress should be aligned to the right

Nautilus window icon is different from the folder icon
Written by markcl the 12 Jun 10 at 22:28. Not an idea
I have folders which I gave an icon so that I can easily distinguish them from the rest. I also need to distinguish their windows from others, since sometimes I get up to 5 nautilus windows open at the same time, I am forced to read the title instead of getting to the folder I want. This destroys the purpose of giving a folder a distinct icon.

Solution #1: Make Nautilus Window Icon the same as the Folder Icon
Written by markcl the 12 Jun 10 at 22:28.
By making the icons of the nautilus window and folder the same, it would be less confusing to find the nautilus window you want when you already specified its icon, and there will be better integration with the rest of the desktop.

Solution #2: Make the Nautilus icon a folder stack with the Nautilus logo on it
Written by milawynsrealm the 20 Jun 10 at 03:12.
Simply having a folder as the Nautilus Icon could be confusing for some users as proposed with 'Solution #1'. I propose by having a icon of a stack of folders with a picture of the Nautilus Logo on it, it would not only indicate that the program deals with folders/folders ( kind of like the icon Windows 7 has for explorer.exe), but shows the user that it is a program and reduces the chances of a user confusing the icon with a standard folder.

Solution #3: Use same icon which defined by user
Written by benoyanthony the 7 Jul 10 at 09:52.
While specific folder is opened under nautilus its windows should display same icon which we have defined to the folder. This will make window easily recognized by specific user who him self have defined the icon.

Improve Icon View in Nautilus
Written by gdi2k the 28 Dec 08 at 10:39. Not an idea
In Nautilus, when browsing in Icon View, it is currently impossible to distinguish between document types that provide previews without looking at their file extensions.

For example, if I have 2 similar documents side by side, one is a PDF, the other is an OpenOffice Writer document, they both look identical and I cannot tell which is the PDF without looking at the file extension.

See here for an example in Ubuntu 8.10:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33359003@N00/3143087405/

Solution: Add a visual cue to the preview icon (either a mini file-type icon (like Windows), or simply a watermark with the file extension (like Mac OS X).

Solution #2: Add File Type Emblem to Previewed File
Written by doctormo the 15 Jan 09 at 03:34.
Add a simple emblem as either an icon or a short text which shows the type of file clearly.

Possibly making it semi transparent.

Remove the music preview with mouse hover
Written by stanislavs1 the 20 Mar 10 at 22:03. Implemented
The feature sounds nice when you read about it. In reality, it gets really annoying after a while. I realize you can disable it if you don't want it, but if little features like this will be added over time, Ubuntu will become too bloated.

Selected solution (#7): Single-click and hold for preview
Written by mydoghasworms the 19 Apr 10 at 14:19.
Instead of previewing an audio file when you hover over it, allow the user to click and hold for e.g. 1 second on the file icon to start the preview. At this point the little overlay should appear and the audio start playing.

Then, when you let go of the mouse button, the preview stops playing.

This behaviour should be configurable between the old and new behaviour in gconf, so users who still want the old preview behaviour can still have it.

Selected solution (#8): Click to play/pause audio preview
Written by davide the 25 May 10 at 21:15.
Audio preview in Nautilus is a tremendous nice feature, improve it with single click play/pause.
On mouse rollover display the "play" icon, after click event show "pause" icon, play sound until it finishes or until the user fires another click on audio icon. This way you can listen all the sound while moving your mouse.

Expanding File column in Nautilus
Written by dionp2 the 12 Aug 10 at 13:55. Implemented
Hi,

Could somebody out there please alter Nautilus so that when you double click on the column width designator (ie the line between two columns) that it expands to the width of the largest file name underneath. Explorer does this in windows and Finder does it in OSX but Nautilus does not do it yet.

Other than that I love nautilus.

Cheers,

Fortunately my few important things are backupped, so I decide to reboot the pc to see if the fail was a temporarily things, but no more history... the disk is definitively lost (reallocation failure).
