enabling vdpau easily on karmic
Written by KhaaL the 25 Jul 09 at 13:37. Implemented
Currently, in order to get VDPAU working you're required to compile mplayer with vdpau option enabled. Even though there are some PPAs, their content is not entirely reliable and still dosen't gurantee a 100% working solution for everybody.

VDPAU also makes playback of high definition content on older hardware possible, since the burden is shared between the CPU and GPU.

VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix) is an API designed by NVIDIA for its GeForce and later GPU hardware, released in november 2008,allowing video programs to offload portions of the video decoding process and video post-processing to the GPU video-hardware.

Selected solution (#1): offer a vdpau-enabled media player in the repository
Written by KhaaL the 25 Jul 09 at 13:37.
mplayer is currently the only media player that can take advantage of vdpau. Mplayer and other media players with that capability should be offered through the repos for easier installation alongside the "vanilla" versions (mplayer could be provided as mplayer-vdpau).

Selected solution (#2): Add an 'advanced' tab to Totem's options, allowing for VDPAU support
Written by Zatara214 the 10 Sep 09 at 00:01.
I think that an 'advanced' tab is called for in Totem. It's a media player that could easily be given the usability that it already has along side the unlimited potential of Mplayer. In this tab, you could configure things like rendering, filtering, advanced subtitle options (SAS/ASS, anyone?), etc.

If not included by default, there should at least be an optional plugin to add this usability.

Selected solution (#3): Hardware accelerate Gstreamer
Written by Auzy the 17 Mar 10 at 21:55.
VDPAU is an Nvidia only solution. Instead, we should upgrade Gstreamer to allow hardware accelerated parts in its pipeline using OpenCL (which will allow it to fallback to software when necessary).
