Ubuntu Post-ITs
Written by XVIIarcano the 8 May 08 at 13:58. Global category: Marketing. New
I am not supporting any act of vandalism with stickers, but it would be neat to have a block of "try Ubuntu" post-it like stickers (so they do not damage any surface you stick them to).
It has already happened me twice to walk in town and see some monitor stuck in a BSOD... a post it samped below it would be the perfect real-world promotional move, even in non BSOD-involving cases... also they are good for taking notes when Tomboy is not an option.

Ok, I said an amenity but at least a funny one ;)

"Ubuntu Mentor"
Written by Alecs Jonson the 2 Apr 09 at 18:54. Global category: Marketing. New
I'll try to keep it short and technical.

Moto: "Do you need someone to help you through your Ubuntu (first) days? Or are you someone who would like to help Ubuntu "padawans"? Join here!"

We have many places where someone can find info about their problems on ubuntu, be it Wiki, forums, launchpad, etc, etc.

But? How about creating a place where people can ask for a mentor guy to lead them through their Ubuntu journey. At begining these people are newbies, but with time they will learn and maybe even take a role as future mentor.

Idea is to make a fixed matching of guys, where this "mentor" guy takes up to X "students" which will then communicate with that particular guy.

So shall we create "Mentor and Student" platform?

(see first comment for more details)

Solution #1: Create Website/Subsite
Written by Alecs Jonson the 2 Apr 09 at 18:54.
This way would be a "partisan" way. You have someone who actively goes to people and leads them through ubuntu life. At same time, you have a newbie who has his personal "ubuntu hotline", his personal ubuntu helper. This mentoring guy does not have to be a pro. He just has to want to help someone, and through his knowledge or knowing where to look for solutions and/or tutorials, or even pass that question towards his mentor, to help his student.

Through this personal connection betwen these two, both will be happy. Student guy will be happy because he will have a person who will be ready to help him, while mentor guy will be able to organize his life much easier, because he will take only X number of people, for whom he will have a helping responsibility.

Also we have to find a way to display these relations and the way of "rewarding" and reputation building.

This idea will allow some people to participate more in community, because some of them do not have knowledge of packaging, translations, development or whatever else.

p.s. Solution #2 has to happen too, but most of us can't help that much in that solution. Also, Sol.#2 won't help, if you have some strange issue with your PC, like your Bluetooth does not work, or you have a "light" version of mainboard, namely Abit IP35-E (my own issue but i knew hot to sort that). Most of people that we are trying to convert now, do not care about chipsets and drivers, they want that their computer to be configured automagically.

Solution #2: Continue working on making the OS useable for everyone.
Written by Biornus the 4 Apr 09 at 07:31.
I would personally be annoyed if I was going to give Ubuntu a whirl and it was so hard to use that I had to have a personal guide.

I admit that there are dificulties, and many things are illogical to the new user. But why not strive towards making it easier to use? Like the new animated intro that is being worked on?

Then solution #1 should be irrelevant.

Solution #4: Partner with opensourcebistro.com
Written by yourpalal the 7 Apr 09 at 20:32.
www.opensourcebistro.com is a site dedicated to making easy to understand tutorials for beginners. Although the site currently emphasises vector linux, the goal is to have tutorials for all distros. The tutorials are made with Wink, and can be viewed embedded in a web browser or downloaded and viewed locally. To have some official canonical tutorials on there would certainly be helpful to many beginners and also one tutorial can answer the same question from many people, making it more efficient than a peer based mentoring system.

Solution #5: Promote and make accessible local Linux User Groups
Written by tchalvakspam the 9 Apr 09 at 22:31.
Linux User Groups help the linux (and especially ubuntu, in my experience) community help each-other, and increase word-of-mouth advertising, which is the best way to get ubuntu out there.
I would much rather try out an operating system suggested and demo-ed to me by a friend than, for example, a phone operative, or on my own. Certainly I was introduced to ubuntu by a friend, and introduced linux to my brother face-to-face. The more there are groups in the local area to increase the exposure to other linux users, the faster ubuntu will spread.

Solution #6: Paid mentors
Written by sanketmedhi the 15 Apr 09 at 09:15.
In response to Solution #1, we can have a web page that will list users registered as mentors with their contact information.

Mentors can charge a small fee for providing services. They can offer free service for a limited duration, say a week, after which users can decide if they would like to pay for continued services.

Users who need a mentor can search for mentors with search criteria like location, accessibility, etc. Users who are already using a mentor's services can rate the mentor based on service, price, etc.

This solution IMO will attract mentors and serious users/beginners/offices.

Solution #7: Simple guide tour
Written by Pacemaker the 9 Jun 09 at 13:30.
In my oppinion you don't need that much.
Only a small guide which explains everything to you (maybe with the possibility that it compares things with windows if you've used that before so the beginning is easier!)

But the main aspect is the first window that appears after installation could be a tour with things like "here are the media files", "this is your new web browser" and so on.
I think that's kind of what microsoft always does, isn't it?

Of course no one would want a copy of windows (or at least i don't and i don't expect others to do so) so there has to be an own way but it ain't that bad for "newbees"!

Sell ubuntu live memory sticks on ubuntu site
Written by JaapHaitsma the 27 Apr 08 at 17:50. Global category: Marketing. New
If they also have some ubuntu branding these are really nice gifts and give aways. Just sell a 2GB or 4GB memory stick for a competitive price. Also might be nice to sell these at exhibitions

Create a "How Can I Help?" site
Written by webhamster the 29 Mar 08 at 08:54. Global category: Marketing. Implemented
I think, a lot of people like to help with ubuntu development, but they don't know where to start. This includes not only programmers but also designers, music composers or just the normal ubuntu user.

So how about creating a website "howcanihelp.ubuntu.com" where everyone (except for C/C++ programmers ;-) ) can find out how to contribute?

Examples:
PHP Programmer -> help with Brainstorm Development, someproject.ubuntu.com needs a new Website, ...
Music Composer -> (don't know where this should link)
Graphic Artist -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork
Foreign Language Native Speaker -> Translate Subtitles at screencasts.ubuntu.com,...
Beginner Ubuntu User -> (don't know if we find something for them :-) )
Advanced Ubuntu User -> Help people at IRC #ubuntu, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WikiToDo, join the Documentation Team...
Marketing Expert -> ...

and so on!

Ubuntu must be the most beautiful desktop
Written by henk0775 the 17 May 08 at 12:25. Global category: Marketing. New
Mark said that "pretty is a feature".
Ubuntu must be eyecandy, pretty, beautiful, glossy. Sometimes human theme is not so, if we try other ones. For example, glossy theme works well.
My idea is beautiful by default.

n.b. Give attenction that this idea is in "marketing".

Viral market Ubuntu like Firefox.
Written by massond the 18 May 08 at 10:17. Global category: Marketing. New
Firefox used viral marketing and is now one of the most popular opensource applications. Do the same thing for Ubuntu. Post advertisments on video sites like Youtube and Google Video.

Google could put Ubuntu-style logo on their homepage on Hardy release day :). By the way, they use Ubuntu on their desktop computers.

Free Software Marketting Website & Contest
Written by Auzy the 20 Jun 08 at 15:01. Global category: Marketing. New
I would like to see a contest started for people to develop marketing campaigns for free software and free operating systems.

The winners would of course win prizes, and their ideas would progress onto becoming donation drives, to make them a reality (posters, radio and TV worldwide) :D

Having a contest not only encourages creativity for our marketing, but makes it easy for the free software world to decide on a campaign together that makes most people happy. And, it makes donations a reality, so we can start our reign (MuHaHaHa).

Because at the moment, we do no advertising, and as a community, its impossible to agree on campaigns that work for nearly everyone. A contest allows everyone to decide, and for us to get some good stuff out there. In fact, the entries may even provide us with some great entertainment ;)

Actively promote Software Freedom Day
Written by Auzy the 16 May 08 at 02:45. Global category: Marketing. New
Canonical should put more effort into promoting Software Freedom Day on the leadup into it, to get as many people involved as possible. There doesn't seem to be any mention of it on their site, despite them being a sponsor

Had it not been for my last idea, I would have not even known about it. Here in melbourne Australia, it seems more like an advertising event, then a socialising event, and now that I know, I may even consider organising a pub crawl. Many other people may be interested in doing the same thing, and the earlier these events are posted, the better.

Apple promotes their events a few months up to the event to get people interested. Software freedom day is a world wide celebration, and is only 4 months away, maybe we should start asap, to get as many teams out there hosting events as possible. Every uni, and every state should be hosting something
