Rename Daemons to services

Won't implement

We should rename the term "daemon" to "service" where-ever possible, as its more user friendly, and users are more used to service as a technical term.
The term "service" requires less people to look up our technical jargon and its more in-line with what almost every other OS (except BSD mainly) calls them.
It also sounds a bit more professional. Calling them services consistantly everywhere makes the OS more polished, and more usable.

Release Kubuntu 8.041 CD's which fix bugs.

Already implemented

In kubuntu's case, it really does need a 8.041 updated CD. I hate to say it, but both the KDE4 and KDE3 live CD's are incredibly buggy.
- If you try to configure samba for instance in KDE3, it says you need to install Samba.. Well, samba comes preinstalled..
- The kde3/4 VNC server seems to ignore when you click that it should allow uninvited connections, and not confirm them. It still asks for confirmation sometimes.
- In KDE4, I dare people to try to configure their IP manually using the knetworkmanager (tried in sudo too). Its missing a .so. So people who cant use DHCP for instance, cant use it.
- A KDEsudo error popped up for me after reboot in KDE3 and KDE4.
I've found MANY bugs within the first hour of using them. Apple releases updated OSX discs without an uproar. We have to accept that kubuntu 8.04 isn't quite final yet, and do the same. And yes, tried Ubuntu too, and that was flawless. But both Kubuntu CD's have some pretty serious bugs.
And no, I'm not a Apple/Microsoft spy who is trying to cause a massive flamewar. Kubuntu has the potential to be a very stable OS, but we have to quickly patch these bugs, and re-release, or our first impression to users will be "buggy".

Strongly market QT4's advantages vs Cocoa to Apple developers

I am a paid Apple Developer member. I used to program in Cocoa. However, a week ago I gave QT a try, and as an Apple developer, I was amazed (I actually preferred it over Cocoa in most places, and over time, I believe it may be over nearly all places). QT is cross platform, and what we need to do is actively compare QT4.4 against Cocoa towards developers, and you will win them over.
I propose that we push QT support as a major feature in Kubuntu 8.04 on the website, and flaunt its features vs Apple's Cocoa language. They are very similar concept wise, and everyone knows C++, so they will be willing to listen. And in fact, for developers, QT has a lot more opportunities :) Everyone likes a cross platform language (with QTJambi, its java, so you don't even need to recompile).
I've shown a few people interested in Apple development the latest QT, and they were also amazed. But now's the time to start pushing this, at launch, instead of mentioning QT vs Cocoa 3 weeks after a Apple Development conference which hypes everyone up so they don't want to listen. Or when Apple developers still think of Linux as lame coding libraries.
We need to get the word out to developers we have an awesome development library, which has fantastic development tools which can easily compete against Cocoa. Because if we succeed, it means a whole new generation of programmers on the linux platform, and a whole lot of new applications
Our problem is, we aren't marketing Linux at all towards developers of other operating systems with any ammunition other then "its free". Lets change that..

"Share ubuntu" menu item

Sharing ubuntu is already quite easier, however, there are still ways to make it even easier, even for the biggest dummies. I propose we add a "share ubuntu button" that has 2 options:
1) Order the latest copy of Ubuntu on CD free for a friend, which would either redirect to the shipit website or send a link to shipit to friends.
2) Download the latest ubuntu from the website automatically, and burn it on CD. This one click operation means people don't even need to know how to burn iso's or do anything, it is all automatic.
And since CD burning tools and tools like wget are already built into ubuntu, so technically its easy to code, and it would be a very small binary.

Organise Linux TV Ads worldwide

We should all work together on a donation drive towards a worldwide generic linux advert for TV to boost interest in linux.
Not a day goes by when people aren't be pounded by marketing adverts from Apple about OSX, or by Microsoft about Vista. So when people buy a new computer, they have been pounded so hard that they will buy OSX or Windows. They will forget we even exist.
By displaying adverts worldwide, we will accumulate interest in Linux, and make sure that they at least consider us before purchasing.
A side effect of this advert may also be that hardware driver developers are no longer able to ignore us as easily.

Free Software Marketting Website & Contest

I would like to see a contest started for people to develop marketing campaigns for free software and free operating systems.
The winners would of course win prizes, and their ideas would progress onto becoming donation drives, to make them a reality (posters, radio and TV worldwide) :D
Having a contest not only encourages creativity for our marketing, but makes it easy for the free software world to decide on a campaign together that makes most people happy. And, it makes donations a reality, so we can start our reign (MuHaHaHa).
Because at the moment, we do no advertising, and as a community, its impossible to agree on campaigns that work for nearly everyone. A contest allows everyone to decide, and for us to get some good stuff out there. In fact, the entries may even provide us with some great entertainment ;)

Organise Linux Newspaper ads

We should get together with the other distributions and organise a donation drive towards a generic linux advert that covers all of us, and organise to show it in as many countries as possible.
Firefox had a newspaper advert in NyTimes, and it was a success. We should do the same to get our message about linux out there, because at the moment everyone from Microsoft to Sun are flaunting their gear on every newspaper, TV station and radio, yet because we are so segmented, we have never organised any proper advertising.
Doing so would help every linux distro, whilst also starting to create the mindset, that next computer purchase, maybe consider linux instead of ignoring it. And it would be more difficult for Hardware Manufacturers to ignore we exist.

Actively promote Software Freedom Day

Canonical should put more effort into promoting Software Freedom Day on the leadup into it, to get as many people involved as possible. There doesn't seem to be any mention of it on their site, despite them being a sponsor
Had it not been for my last idea, I would have not even known about it. Here in melbourne Australia, it seems more like an advertising event, then a socialising event, and now that I know, I may even consider organising a pub crawl. Many other people may be interested in doing the same thing, and the earlier these events are posted, the better.
Apple promotes their events a few months up to the event to get people interested. Software freedom day is a world wide celebration, and is only 4 months away, maybe we should start asap, to get as many teams out there hosting events as possible. Every uni, and every state should be hosting something

Rename "Ubuntu Mobile" to "Ubuntu Touch" or "Touchbuntu"

I was surprised to learn that Ubuntu mobile had nothing to specifically do with embedded devices or mobile phones as the name implies.
However, it turns out, its main focus is touchscreen computing, which can include carPC's, or any touch screen computer.
So lets rename it to Ubuntu Touch to make people recognise immediately, it is a Touchscreen distro. This way people like me, who are porting my carPC to linux, know immediately that its not just for mobile phones, so we don't ignore it.
