Improve the boot sequence to reduce the number of mode switches and jarring look and feel changes. While our current boot sequence has evolved beyond a verbose scroll of text on the console, it is still not as elegant as it could be. Increased elegance would result in a much improved user experience, and increase user confidence in the distribution.

Include Compiz Fusion Manager by default
Developer comments
Sorry, but no. The stack has to mature. DRI2, drivers and default settings of compiz are the things that need attention. Adding and enabling "power-user"-features by default, which are only used by a fraction of the whole user-base, is an unnecessary introduction of UI-clutter we try to avoid.

Font Rendering

Every time I install Ubuntu, the first thing I have to modify is the font rendering. I use the "sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config" command for that.
The Ubuntu system would be more enhanced if it had more sofisticated fonts with a nice contrast.
Every operational system has an unique "look and feel" thing... Ubuntu must acquire its.

Make gnome-panel more beautiful

Gnome-panel drops behind other desktops in the look and feel of the panel.
There are loads of Ideas e.g. on gnome-look.org about improving the panel and especially the menu. It looks like a lot of people don't like the situation right now.
It would be nice to have some discussion, how gnome-panel could be improved.
Please notice, this is not about changing the panel into a dock, but about extending its funktionallity and look and feel while keeping what we already have, and works well.

If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!

Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.
How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability
I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light
I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs
Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!
P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Include 32 bit depth for video

Ubuntu has a 24bit color depth by default.
It would be great if it gets a 32 bit color video display which would render better graphics, better video playback and might also help game lovers to run games better on linux.
I always feel video playback is where window$ takes a upper hand over ubuntu... Please fix this.

Fix tearing when dragging windows

Using 7.10, Gnome desktop, and the proprietary nVidia driver, you'd think that dragging a window around on the desktop would look flawless. But it doesn't.
Moving the window around you see tearing. As you drag it quickly, you repeateldy see the top half of the window occupy its new location but the bottom half slightly to the left or right (i.e., without the updated position).
AFAIK this doesn't happen on Windows, and presumably not on the Mac either. It reminds me of a graphics application that isn't using double-buffering when it should be.
This little bit of ugliness seems to make Ubuntu just a little less professional-seeming.

While the point is valid in principle, the idea doesn't have enough detail to be implemented ;)
Seriously, that is in part what this site is for, but posting actual suggestions for concrete issues is more helpful.

Make it looking cool with an nice glasslook!
Mac OSX and Vista look nice, Ubuntu with Gnome look like sh** - i mean terrible (anno 1990!?).
It wouldt be much more accepted from the usual/0815 users ("hey i like it, it looks cool" - like people sayed about Vista)!
