Work is being done along to make that possible (though I don't know an ETA).
First step: the Fridge (http://fridge.ubuntu.com ) is now using Launchpad authentification via OpenID.

LP is actively working on both this:

Please note the related blueprints on that bug for more details.

We have openid support in our todolist for the Ubuntu QA website which the brainstorm website is part of.

We are running Drupal 5 and support for OpenID will come with Drupal 6. We'll then be able to auth against Launchpad's OpenID server.

i think this should give just more and more people possibility to get involved

OpenID would be nice for all Ubuntu related sites.
The only downfall is, I already have an account at each of these sites :P

How about using OpenID for system login, too?

Resonance378 wrote on the 29 Feb 08 at 15:51
Marrying the forums, qa, etc would be a great start... currently you need 3 accounts for the Ubuntu site: Forums, Documentation (to edit the wiki), and here (QA/Brainstorm)

wjblack you should make that a new idea! OpenID logins for the Ubuntu Desktop, I very much like that!!!!!

Every Machine could be its own OpenID provider as well in the LAN via avahi. So I could easily allow user@othermachine to access my machine or my shares.

This should be integrated with Samba as well. And Samba should propose its CIFS implementation as an ISO standard, showing M$ where innovation comes from!

http://drupal.org/project/openid

That is what I run on my drupal sites.

OpenID still needs to be refined. Users need to remember a subdomain to sign up. Its not much to remember but its a lot to type, especially for me, thevirtuesofxen.myopenid.com.

Auzy wrote on the 2 Mar 08 at 05:38
Have you tried maybe using a short openid? Also, lots of sites use email logins anyway, so it shouldn't be that painful

vegardjo wrote on the 3 Mar 08 at 08:29
I believe the only difference between Drupal 5 and 6 with regards to OpenId, is that the OpenId module linked to above is included in the core distribution in Drupal 6, while you have to install it yourself in Drupal 5. I use it on Drupal 5 sites with no problems.

+1 for openID, would be great if we could transfer already existing accounts over to our respective openIDs though.

Steve413z wrote on the 9 Mar 08 at 17:34
it would be nice if most/all the ubuntu sites had one login

viperhoot wrote on the 13 Mar 08 at 04:08
Hey ! OpenID in the LoCo Site too !

williumbillium wrote on the 7 Apr 08 at 06:35
And please, don't just be a OpenID provider. I already have an OpenID account and registering another one to be able to log into Ubuntu sites defeats the purpose of the idea.

Kingskid wrote on the 18 Apr 08 at 09:59
-1 NO OpenID please!

I voted for "Yes", but please take a look at "The problem(s) with OpenID" here:

Not much activity on this idea - anyone know

First step on the road : the Fridge (http://fridge.ubuntu.com) is now using LP authentification.

Stebalien wrote on the 23 Nov 08 at 21:16
@nand: Supporting LP authentication is not even close to supporting openID. The whole point of openID is to be able to authenticate with many sites using only one site OF YOUR CHOOSING. I don't want to be forced to use LP. I want to use a service dedicated to providing a secure openID implementation. LP shouldn't try to be something that it is not. It does a very good job at hosting open source projects and the launchpad developers shouldn't waste time providing services that are better implemented elsewhere.

AdminAdmin nand (Brainstorm admin) wrote on the 24 Nov 08 at 15:25
My mistake : the Fridge is now using *OpenID* LP authentification.
