It'd be great if hibernating/return from hibernate would be as slick as the boot/shutdown screens (or even slicker since the boot/shutdown process is not perfect either, but that is already covered in idea #37). Of course, having it rock-solid is more important but this is already covered in idea #94.
I personally do a "real boot" only when the kernel changed or my hibernate failed (this happens once in a while). For people like me, having a nice progress bar during the "return from hibernate" and "hibernate" phases are as important or even more so than having a slick "normal boot".
FWIW, currently (with Gutsy on my HP 6710b) I get the following:
On hibernate, I get a black screen (in text mode) with a blinking cursor for a while, then a bunch of messages related to USB stuff, then a long pause again then it shuts down.
On return from hibernate, I get the Ubuntu logo (as for a normal boot) and the placeholder for the progressbar but it doesn't get updated, and there is an ugly white rectangle below the progressbar (the width of the whole screen and approx twice the height of the progressbar).
