Idea #17087: Remove gnome-screensaver from the default installation

Written by laceration the 6 Jan 09 at 22:56. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
# It can crash your system
It has happened to me before, one of the screensavers it plays does it.
# It is obsolete
Screensavers were invented in the olden days because display phospors would burn in. Displays have not been built like this for eons.
# It uses a lot system resources
# ...most of all...It cannot detect if a video is playing and will start while one is playing. gnome-screensaver expects video players to implement the solution on their end in a burdensome and difficult way. That is so bassackwards!

To everybody that still has this enabled, you do not have a COMPUTER with a screensaver also running. You have a SCREENSAVER with a computer also running. We should fork it off and call it gnomescreensaverbuntu.

Actually, if you hook up Ubuntu to a Plasma TV, then a screensaver maybe would be a good idea. Plasma screens does burn in.

I want a way to blank my screen quickly when I don't use the computer for a moment. A non-blank screen can be distracting. And you might want to hide sensitive information. And you might want to lock the computer.

And you might want to do all this without logging off.

So something like a screensaver is still necessary, even though the actual screen hardware doesn't need it.

However, I could do fine without the automatic screensaving after an idle period function. For me it would be sufficient with a possibility to manually blank the screen with a keyboard shortcut.
