Intergrate SSL with FTP with Nautilus
Written by knego the 3 Mar 08 at 16:50. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I browse samba, nfs and ftp-shares daily in Nautilus, and i love the drag & drop between folders.

Sadly though i need to use another ftp-client to connect to my ssl-enabled ftp. It would be wonderful to use Nautilus to browse these too.

Nautilus = An all-in-one solution!

show network transfer speed
Written by julien-1993 the 4 Mar 08 at 23:13. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
Should show the transfer speed when copying file to and from another computer on the lan. I think it already do that in kde. should be the same thing in gnome.

give option between ipw3945 and iwl3945
Written by oodlesofmoddles the 2 Apr 08 at 14:52. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I tested out 8.04 Beta on my laptop after being very impressed with how it fared on my desktop.

I currently have to use wpa_supplicant.conf to connect to my internet here at school because NetworkManager does not allow for open algorithm with second phase MSCHAPV2.

Using the same setup on 8.04, I cannot connect to the internet.

It would be nice to either have:

a.) NetworkManager support open algorithm with second phase MSCHAPV2

or

b.) Allow for users to decide whether to use iwl or ipw drivers

Thanks!

P.S. I am trying to get my fellow students to use Ubuntu and this is quite a big deterrent.

Home networking is cumbersome and inefficient for inexperienced users
Written by Aphoxema the 15 Jan 09 at 01:21. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
Ubuntu still seems to move around the idea of clients and servers, and many applications do because it's a system that works and is generally as reliable as the server is.

This is not a problem when it's used appropriately, but one thing where a server/client or a series of servers and clients should be absolutely transparent is on home networks, particularly file shares.

I've noticed to use the Network place you have to select the computer you want to access the shares for, you have to go through several steps to do this. This greatly resembles typical use of SMB in Windows and can be confusing for people who are less familiar with networking.

Solution #1: Make home networking more transparent and configuration free
Written by Aphoxema the 15 Jan 09 at 01:21.
Networked Ubuntu computers in a home environment might benefit from making certain assumptions and making file shares more accessible.

A globally shared, default folder much like Music or Video could be used to assume that files put into it will be shared across the network. Minimal access right should need to be configured by anyone, if any at all, but some protection from abuse should be implemented.

The task of locating shares should be eliminated, and on a single level hierarchy only one level should have to be checked.

Solution #2: Peered Networking
Written by doctormo the 15 Jan 09 at 21:42.
Within a home network it should be possible for other computers on the same local network to be identified (seen) automatically.

Once you can see a bunch of computers that don't trust each other. You can use a similar system as the bluetooth pairing (on screen secrete) to making the computers peers, otherwise they would be treated as guests.

Peers would then be able to share users, files and other various things much more easily. A setting which describes if the peer is owned by the same person, a member of the same household, or some strange guy who you want to share with only once.

This then allows you to do much more interesting things with Avahli and streamlining your networking and multiple computer networks.

Solution #3: Rubbish, installing Samba is trivial...
Written by r0g the 20 Jan 09 at 23:03.
Other computers can already see each others shares thanks to that damnable promiscuous Avahi daemon. In fact my roommate (who's just bought a macbook) came up to me the other day asking "What are all these folders here?", turns out they were my shares.

Really once samba is installed sharing a folder is as easy as Right-click, Properties, Share and network locations can be trivially bookmarked to save you having t do difficult things like remebering the names of your computers. How much simpler do you want it to be?

Solution #4: Run X by default on a separate Home Server edition
Written by Clorox the 3 Aug 09 at 17:53.
I understand that on corporate servers, running X is only a resource hog. However, on a home server that hardly gets any traffic, running X will not be very detrimental and will help the user get the server configured and running.

On windows, the backspace key goes to the previous page in your history but on Ubuntu it doesn't. It was because of a bug I believe but it would be a help.

GPRS via Bluetooth needs a gui
Written by fazillatheef the 6 Jun 08 at 10:10. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I am using hardy heron..and I connect to internet using a "how to" that I got from the ubuntu forum..It requires me to type commands in the terminal....
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-257127.html

What suprised me was the the fact that, Hardy has lot of improvement in terms of bluetooth configuration gui...and the network manager has new gprs configuration section... I think someone can connect to internet using it...but not me

As a normal user I think there should be a Gui wizard to configure a GPRS internet connection through bluetooth.

Auto Kill the firefox process when it crashes and stays in memory due to flash..
Written by madjr the 11 Mar 08 at 05:15. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
Big problem that not only affects firefox 2, it also happens on firefox 3 beta and hasn't been resolved yet.

I get at least 4 or 5 crashes daily on older hardware. But even on new modern hardware i still get 1 or 2 crashes.

As everyone knows, the crashes happen the most when viewing heavy flash (be it fullscreen video, flash game, a few big flash ads on websites, etc.). It specifically happens when changing sites (visible crash) or when closing the browser (invisible crash, but FF does not free up the memory)

While i have a "killall firefox-bin" launcher icon on my desktop, sometimes my system becomes so unresponsive because it stays in memory and i have to try to reboot or force a system shutdown.

Anyway this can be easily fixed (when implemented) if the process is killed after a crash, freeing up the memory and making the system usable again.

sadly i had to install the windows version of Firefox + flash in Wine to avoid the crashing.... so why do we have a buggy linux version that won't even detect the crash and free up the mem??

Alright now that we finally have a GUI tool for ndiswrapper, it should be able to detect the chipset used and if there are drivers available, automatically download and install them.
