Thunderbird takes up space in launcher if kept open just to check for new mail
Written by stuart10 the 16 Oct 11 at 23:26. Related project: Unity. Already implemented
If you need to keep Thunderbird open to check for incoming mail, you have to sacrifice space in the Unity launcher to its icon.

Solution #1: Minimise to messaging menu
Written by stuart10 the 16 Oct 11 at 23:26.
It would be nice if when you closed Thunderbird (with the window controls) it minimised to the messaging menus. That is, if it continued to run, but did not occupy a space in the unity launcher and could be accesed through the messaging menu.

The ability to do this could be optional (perhaps done with an extension), so that the default behaviour could be retained for those who want it.

Solution #2: A service to autocheck for new email
Written by ubumar the 24 Oct 11 at 04:29.
A special service can be made that will autostart with Ubuntu and automatically check for new email at regular intervals of time. New messages would be indicated with a colored dot on the envelope icon in the indicator panel. This will eliminate the need of launching an email client just to check for new email. The messaging menu in the indicator panel should provide an option to quit the service. Also, it should be easy to enable or disable the service auto-starting.

More detailed progressbars in transmission
Written by Hamad_Spider the 22 Jul 10 at 19:40. Related project: Transmission. Not an idea
When you want to preview files that you are downloading using torrent, you need to know which parts of files have been downloaded.
For example, for an avi file you need the first parts of file so you can preview it.
In transmission, it is not possible to see which parts of files have been downloaded(in ktorrent it is possible).

Solution #1: Provide a more detailed progressbar for transmission in the main window
Written by Hamad_Spider the 22 Jul 10 at 19:40.
The new progressbar should be filled by considering the downloaded parts, like ktorrent.
There can be a plus(+) sign in the left side of each torrent to expand it and see more detailed progress of each file in that torrent.
So for the child files, the progressbar should be filled in the parts which has been downloaded.
I don't mean a normal, solid progressbar. I mean a progressbar like ktorrent's.

Solution #2: Provide a more detailed progressbar for transmission in the properties window
Written by Hamad_Spider the 22 Jul 10 at 19:46.
The main progressbar should not be changed.
The progressbar in front of each file in the properties window for files should display the details.
So the progressbar for each file in the properties window should be filled in the way that it shows the parts that have been downloaded, like ktorrent's progressbars. Not a solid progressbar.

Solution #4: Transmission notification area startup
Written by Lyfang the 16 Aug 10 at 12:50.
Why not enable Transmission minimized to the notification area at startup by default?

Downloading a large file on slow connections takes too long
Written by Hamad_Spider the 13 May 10 at 08:47. Global category: Internet & Networking. Won't implement
On slow connections it takes a lot of time to download a large file (that is not broken to parts) from Internet.
For example downloading Ubuntu's CD iso image takes too long using an 8KB/s Internet traffic.

Solution #1: Application for Group(Parallel) downloading
Written by Hamad_Spider the 13 May 10 at 08:47.
If you and your friends(each of you has a slow connection) could download one part of the file and then share this part with other friends(I mean sharing physically, for example copying for other friends by using a flash memory) and join the parts in one place, then you will get the file faster.
It would be a group work and parallel downloading.
We should develop a download manager or a plug-in for other download managers to do this.
So the download manager gets the number of group members who wanted to participate in downloading that file and give a number to each member. Then, each member enters his/her number in his own computer(in that download manager application) and the download manager just downloads that part of the file.
Then group members copy all the parts in one place and join them.
Certainly this kind of downloading just would be done for links with resume capability.

Solution #2: The torrent download of Ubuntu ISOs should be split in pieces.
Written by dE the 13 May 10 at 17:19.
The torrent download of Ubuntu ISOs should be split in pieces and an executables (which runs in windows, Linux and solaris) will be clicked to combine them; that way you can split the download among your friends.

Written by vinutux the 8 Mar 08 at 04:16. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
There is not a good download manager available under ubuntu.
So many people came from windows prefer download managers always. Some of download mangers available but not stable enough.

Multiget --- always crashed

D4l --- too oldy and buggier

wget --- command line only

wxdfast --- tooo buggy and unusable

Aria ---- too oldy gtk1 app

DownThemAll ---- too slow and not work without firefox

.......................................

some one make a ubuntu version of opensource "freedownloadmanager" (freedownloadmanager.org) appreciated.

Solution #2: System-wide download manager with GUI
Written by dragoninsane the 4 Jul 08 at 12:55.
*-install download manager natively to ubuntu-small,light weight but bundled with advance preferences.
*-Most importantly it should have ability to handle firefox, browsers for gnome integration so we can click the download links and download will get added to downloadmanager
*-ability to hide into system tray when there is no activity.
*-right click in system tray choose>>download speed,
*-download basket that will make a small box appear through which we can drag the url of download and download starts in download manager.

Solution #3: Develop a professional GUI for Aria2c and/or Axel
Written by mbz99 the 7 Jul 09 at 11:23.
The Linux user must has a professional GUI Download Manager and also fast as IDM for windows and others. There are two Linux download managers *fastest in Linux and faster than IDM* but there are not good GUI for them, I made benchmark for the famous download managers for Linux in the thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1205013
, the result is aria2 and Axel are the fastest in Linux and there is a big time difference from the other because they support multi-connections (parallel connection) and multi-mirrors .

We need a Good and Advanced GUI for download manager in Ubuntu, and can be used with linux browsers firefox , Konqueror, Chromeum...etc.
There is project for making GUI for Axel
http://code.google.com/p/axel-gui/
and looking for similar project.

Solution #6: Port using winelib
Written by Andrius the 3 Feb 09 at 16:02.
As it compiles under mingw, it could be compiled using winelib in ubuntu, it's a good testcase for both FDM and wine and after that the functions could be gradually be changed to be independant of winelib.

Solution #7: Implimenting the Features
Written by catcatmu the 1 Mar 09 at 16:58.
Implement the extra features on an existing Download Manager. This way instead of rewriting code we can use part of the code of FDM. I suggest using Kget as a base. Kget already integrates nicely into the browsers and supports many features. All the extra features can be implimented without too much of a rewrite: Using KIO, the 'file preview function can be implemented and partial downloading, Using the plugins Utube(...) functions can be added. For scheduling (I'm not sure) but there is a Kde program already present maybe just embed it and add some signals/slots?

Multi Part downloading -- already present
Downloading from video sites -- Through a plugin

Detecting Mirrors -- Already present (Not sure)
Upload Manager -- Using KIO?
Resuming of broken Downloads and Checksums -- Plugin for chacksum
Scheduling -- (Not sure...)
Torrents -- Already Present
Partial downloading of zip archives - Through KIO

Solution #8: Solution #6: Use fatrat and enhance its features
Written by sradhakrishna the 12 Jul 09 at 11:05.
Fatrat - a very good download manager that i've come across in recent times. Amazing features, especially the remote control types.

I'd suggest using Fatrat as a base, evaluating what features are required and implement those.

IMHO, porting FDM is going to be an absolute pain, and enhancing Fatrat, an easy one.

Kudos to the creator of this nice piece of work!

Solution #11: Use Retriever
Written by ceefour the 16 Mar 10 at 22:41.
Retriever (http://www.halogenware.com/software/retriever.html) is a Java-based GUI Download Manager that supports multi-segment downloads, torrents, among a host of other features. It's also free and actively developed.

Supported by FlashGot as well.

Solution #12: Port Fatrat to gtk+
Written by pazuzuthewise the 19 Apr 10 at 22:38.
Fatrat (http://fatrat.dolezel.info/) can handle all download-involving tasks:
- file-sharing sites (rapidshare, etc.)
- torrents, including torrent creation, DHT, UPnP, encryption etc.
- http(s)/ftp download acceleration
- youtube downloads
- support for proxies
But it's QT4 dependencies are immense, it requires almost a full KDE4 desktop.
It seems better than the above-mentioned Retriever (and it doesn't use the yahoo search-engine!)
It would be great if a Gtk+ port were available.

Until something like this appears for Gnome, I'll stick with DownThemAll and transmission and Jdownloader.

Solution #13: JDownloader
Written by bircoe the 22 Apr 10 at 05:20.
I've just installed JDownloader which seems to be pretty nice, supporting websites like rapidshare, megaupload and hotfile (there's a huge list), it supports scheduling out of the box (once you turn on the addon) and seems to be pretty good so far, just need to wait till next billing period so I can properly test the scheduling features...

Gwibber and restricive gvernment firewalls
Written by DregonX the 30 Apr 10 at 10:43. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
It's great that Lucid Lynx is 'social from the start', but given that I'm in China right now, every single service I should be able to log into from Gwibber is blocked by the Great Firewall. Usually I just use TOR to get around the firewall from within my browser when I need to, but Gwibber doesn't have a proxy setting panel I can find in which to set it to use TOR. I know I could set the whole system to go through the TOR proxy, but then all my network services would be slow all the time.

Solution #1: Proxy settings for individual accounts in Gwibber
Written by DregonX the 30 Apr 10 at 10:43.
I suggest that for people like me, and the 2 billion or so others who are behind restrictive government firewalls in various countries, Gwibber should be able to have individual proxy settings for each service. After all, Ubuntu is suppose to be for everyone, isn't it?
