A valuable network troubleshooting dialog
Written by RyanFelder the 17 May 12 at 15:30. Related project: Network Manager. New
As a network engineer, I see reports from my own technical support department that miss some basic, valuable troubleshooting steps.

Network diagnostic tools in Ubuntu are intimidating and unintuitive for less technical users.

Solution #1: A valuable network troubleshooting dialog
Written by RyanFelder the 17 May 12 at 15:30.
There should be an easy to read, pretty dialog that runs some basic troubleshooting steps and displays the results.

The idea is to assist helpdesk type support agents to resolve issues quickly, which would, in turn, help the end user.

I am connected wirelessly to the SSID 'abc123' using WPA2.
I can get an IP address. It is '192.168.10.170'
I can ping my gateway. It is '192.168.10.1'
I can do DNS lookups.
I can ping external ips by ip.
I can ping external ips by hostname.

I'm aware there are tools that provide this information, but providing it in an easy to find, non-scary, low-tech way would be very helpful for anyone who has to call a support department.

Solution #1: Counter
Written by bpb101 the 11 May 12 at 21:54.
A download counter on all programs in the software center.
We see how many people reviewed the software but not how many downloaded it .

Solution #2: Stats

Show more than just downloads to avoid the pitfall mentioned in the comments.

Can show downloads, installed (based on Canonical anonymous feedback), last updated, etc.

Brings the Software Center inline with app stores like Google Play or App Store.

Support Decentralized Sync   forum
Written by dolphinaura the 16 May 12 at 23:46. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
A decentralized sync system, similar to Windows Live Mesh would be quite useful for users. Some users use Ubuntu One, not for backup, but for syncing files between computers. This is slow, and unefficient, as it does

Computer 1 -> Ubuntu One -> (Ubuntu One on Computer 2 notices updated file) -> Download to Computer 2.

Instead, with decentralized sync, we can reduce the storage overhead, and the 5GB storage space can be solely used for backup. Here, Computer 1 directly transfers changed files to Computer 2, and vice versa. This allows for a much faster sync.

Computer 1 -> Computer 2.

Solution #1: Decentralized sync utility should be added to Ubuntu One
Written by dolphinaura the 16 May 12 at 23:46.
An option should be given in Ubuntu One for synchronizing folders between two computers through the LAN/WAN. The computers that are syncing should be logged on the same Ubuntu One account on both computers.

*updated
If (one) of the computers are offline, and files are changed, then the changed files will be added to a small hidden text database in Ubuntu One. After the computer(s) are online again, files will be synced.

If multiple (i.e. 2+) computers are signed on at once, once a computer has received a changed file, it will upload to those that haven't received a changed file yet.

rpcbind can not be restricted to a specific interface
Written by phillyclaude the 16 May 12 at 14:50. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
You can not tell rpcbind to listen to a specific interface for TCP requests. The -h flag provides this functionality for UDP requests only

for those of us who need to mount an NFS client on a machine with a public interface, this is not great. It can be limited using tcpwrappers, or iptables, but I would feel more comfortable if it weren't even listening in the first place.

this was inspired by a similar issue patched by FreeBSD

Solution #1: modify rpcbind to listen to a specific interface
Written by phillyclaude the 16 May 12 at 14:50.
Please modify rpcbind so it only listens to a specific interface for all requests.

so system monitor can show you a sum but i think it's better to show it like cpu history for multicores.

Integrate Google Apps (Docs, Maps, Mail) as apps
Written by idude.aldunate the 2 May 12 at 16:16. Related project: Unity. New
I use a lot of word processing and spreadsheets, and I do this using Google Docs (now Google Drive). I think that it would be really cool if there was an app (a real app) for Google Services integrated with Unity.
The idea is that when I typed my google data (mail+password) on "online accounts" (settings), google services icons would appear on the launcher, and thus, be able to access to my gDrive, Calendar and gmail very easily.
